Why Did Pats Dump Collins, Easley and Chandler Jones Again?

November 14, 2016 by Mike Dussault

Before I get into this let me say that I think most hold Bill Belichick to an impossible standard. He’s the best coach in NFL history, but that doesn’t mean he hits on every draft pick or that every personnel decision he makes turns out right. Better than the league average? Yup. More often right than not? Yes. But he’s not perfect and I don’t expect him to be.

I know the likes of Dan Shaughnessy think that bloggers like me are nothing more than fanboys who wave pom poms and blindly think everything Belichick does is infallible. But after how the Patriots defense has looked through nine games, even I have a hard time not casting a critical eye on the moves made by Belichick since last offseason.

By themselves, getting rid of Dominique Easley, Chandler Jones and Jamie Collins could’ve been easily dismissed and swept under the rug. But collectively jettisoning first round picks from 2012 and 2014 and a second round pick from 2013 now seems even more extreme as we’re forced to watch a defense that can’t get off the field, can’t disrupt a quarterback, and looks generally lifeless when they’re supposed to be rounding into form.

Why did we rationalize getting rid of them all again? Locker room cancer and was going to want too much money and freelancing? Something like those? Well at this point I’d happily take all those “problems” back since all three had more energy and life to their game than anything we’re seeing from the Patriots defense now.

Patriots Release Dominique Easley

April 13, 2016 by Mike Dussault

Patriots release Dominique Easley

Well this is a bummer, the Patriots released Dominque Easley today, their first round pick from 2014 who I was all over in the draft process. Of course this is a shocking move. Easley had injury concerns in college and those carried over into the pros, with both of his first two seasons ending on IR, but the current speculation is that it was more about his off-the-field behavior that precipitated him being cut.

When the Pats selected Easley it signaled somewhat of a departure for them. In the past, the Pats were more often a two-gapping defensive tackle team and Easley was not a two-gapper. He was a pure one-gapper with a superlative get off. That’s what you need on defense now, especially when you’re playing three-quarters of your snaps with more than four defensive backs on the field.

I saw some speculation that the release could signal another shift in scheme, but I don’t buy that anymore than I bought Revis and Browner walking meant the Pats were going to more zone coverage. Again, if we’re talking about the old “base” defense, it’s maybe 20% of the snaps. That’s not where games are won or lost. They’re won or lost against the pass, and that’s why you can’t have a bunch of two-gappers at defensive tackle now. You need variation, especially with your third-and-long personnel. You’re not cutting a first round pick because you don’t think you need pass rushers anymore.

So this all confirms that this is indeed about off the field issues. Here are a smattering of tweets that have come in, giving us an idea of what the Pats were no longer willing to put up with.

Regarding Easley, there is no one incident that led to release. Call it philosophical differences on following injury programs, etc

— Tom E. Curran (@tomecurran) April 13, 2016

Easley’s knees are in pretty bad shape, and there’s not a lot of room for improvement, per source. Still stunning timing for his release.

— Jeff Howe (@jeffphowe) April 13, 2016

With the great rookie season of Malcom Brown and the retention of Alan Branch with the signing of Terrence Knighton, the Pats are still okay depth-wise at defensive tackle, but I’d still love to see them add an upfield element for their pass rush packages. Chris Jones could be in for an interesting re-birth after missing all of 2015. He’s the on-roster player I see most impacted by this release.

The good news is that this is an excellent defensive tackle class, with great fits for the Pats schematically, but this opens up a new line of thinking in the draft with a specific need.

Still, it will be interesting to see what Easley does whenever he’s picked up by a new team. It’s hard not to immediate label him the biggest disappointment of Bill Belichick’s draft career with the Patriots. That’s partially because my own expectations and excitement were so high when they selected him. But that’s what the draft is, a crap shoot that you have to take some big swings on, the same way they did with Rob Gronkowski.

This was a big swing, and unfortunately, a big miss.

And now Dominique Easley goes down…

December 15, 2015 by Mike Dussault

Dominique Easley
was placed on IR today, ending his season early for the second time in his second year. Easley was part of the Patriots pass-rush package, often playing with three defensive ends, and they were putting together the best third down defense percentage since 2009.

As an Easley fan from the get-go, I find this one incredibly frustrating. Sometimes injuries are just freak things, but it’s hard to argue this is a trend for Easley. Both this year and last year’s season-enders are somewhat of a mystery, but along with his double ACL tears in college it also seems like he has an endless parade of other small ailments.

I thought Easley was having a very good season, but not the “breakout super season” some are calling it on Twitter right now. He had his moments and seemed to be getting more and more comfortable, but I still think rookie Malcom Brown has looked like the better and more consistent player this year.

So now what? There’s no question the pass rush is taking a blow. Easley was the most explosive guy off the snap and caused a lot of issues. Now they’ll be forced to either go to a 300+ tackle on third down like Brown, Hicks or Branch. Less likely is the option of using Geneo Grissom who saw some time in this role early in the season when Easley was out.

After Grissom’s punt team snafu against the Eagles I doubt we see him in much action the rest of the season, and certainly not in the playoffs.

Perhaps a creative answer is using Hightower in a rush role in the playoffs. This is only doable if they feel comfortable with Jerod Mayo in coverage.

Aside from Dion Lewis, this is my biggest buzz kill injury of the season and the first major hit to the defense. Still not as bad as it would be to lose Collins, Hightower or one of the big three defensive ends, but Easley’s impact in the most important part of the game is irreplaceable and his absence will be felt on third-and-longs.

Racking up eight pressures against the Colts’ interior offensive line on only 21 pass rushes, Easley earned the highest pass rushing productivity (29.8) of any defensive tackle this week.

FOOTBALL OUTSIDERS:  Film Room: Chandler and Easley

Enjoyed this read from Football Outsiders with nice GIFs. You really don’t know what the Patriots are evolving to this season, but these two guys are likely big pieces of it.

I don’t feel I’m at my best yet, I don’t feel like anything has happened yet. The season isn’t even here yet. So I don’t feel like I’ve gotten anywhere.

Patriots Notebook: Dominique Easley’s best yet to come | Boston Herald

That’s the right attitude Easley-E, all that counts is just staying on the field and stacking success. The rest will come.
