Training Camp Update: Patriots Depth Chart Reset

The Patriots and Saints will get underway with joint practices this morning. This is always a great way to get a new look at the players who have settled in over the last 12 days of training camp. It’s hard to believe it’s going by so quickly!

But in that time we’ve had some definite movement on the depth charts. The Pats have been fairly lucky so far with injuries, but that can change quickly. Still, the overall depth is promising, since there hasn’t been much juggling on the low end of the roster. That means we should see some quality performances out of the guys who are under-the-radar.

So before things get crazy with joint practices and games, let’s take a quick look at how the depth chart looks here as we stand on August 9th, just 33 days away from the season opener in Arizona!

Training camp opens today!! Rejoice! Real football!!

Here are the up-to-date depth charts with those in red on the PUP list and rookies are in blue. As a rule, rookies start out at or near the bottom but things will change quickly.

New England Patriots 2015 Training Camp Depth Chart

The Pats filled the last two open roster spots today, and neither one was with Reggie Wayne. The first was veteran cornerback Tarrell Brown and the second was undrafted rookie receiver Zach D’Orazio who was with the team previously this offseason

So this looks like what we’re rolling into camp with. A couple notes – names in red are guys with injury issues that could land them on the PUP. Once the PUP comes out next week I will adjust the depth charts accordingly. Rookies are in blue and generally I put them at the bottom of the depth chart to start camp. That will likely change quickly.

Patriots Depth Chart as roster hits 90 players.

Here’s where we’re at with today’s signings of Dane Fletcher and Zack D’Orazio, a big slot receiver who went undrafted. I’m still leaving a spot for Dan Connolly, because if he hasn’t signed with another team at this point, he’s probably coming back to the Patriots and just enjoying an extended offseason. For someone with a lengthy injury history like Connolly, it’s understandable he’d take some extra time to heal up a bit.

The dichotomy between the defensive front seven and the secondary is quite interesting. There are so many pieces up front that could be put together so many different ways, while on the back end it’s hard to say what we have outside of Devin McCourty.

It’s a good bet there will be plenty of rotation at all areas and it’s important not to read too much into it. Though there are some specifics we can watch for like which corners stay on the outside and which work the slot consistently.

Bringing back Fletcher and Spikes gives them enough linebackers with experience to set the tone. I am still not convinced of the long-term value of either, though I like both players and could see both sticking on the main roster. But their ceiling could be determined by just how healthy Dont’a Hightower and Jerod Mayo are.

New England Patriots Pre-Draft Depth Chart

Here’s where we sit as we get ready for the draft and I continue to be surprised about the hole at left guard. Sure, Connolly could re-sign and then thinks are at least manageable to start, but it does reinforce how the Pats really should land one of the top guards in this year’s class.

I’m definitely keeping an eye on athletic right defensive ends as well in this draft, and while there’s okay depth at linebacker, there’s only the starting trio who can really be counted on. Still, I’m excited to see cameron Gordon and James Morris, as well as Darius Fleming with a full Patriot year under his belt.
