Patriots need to take a few steps to get back on track – Sports – The Boston Globe

Patriots need to take a few steps to get back on track – Sports – The Boston Globe

Great pregame read, or save it for after the game, as Bedard breaks down three things the Pats need to do to regroup on defense.

Here’s a quick preview of them, with some of my comments, we’re very much on the same page and I love when that happens:

1. Get Gronk/Hernando healthy – not sure if either will be 100% this year, but the bye week comes at a good time. Hopefully Hernando’s ankle doesn’t linger.

2. Rush the passer better – Bedard even gives a shout out to PatsProp mascot Myron Pryor. I like that he mentioned Dont’a Hightower too, he could be the creative answer with more blitzes.

3. Get by in the secondary – that’s about all they can do. Get healthy and hope things gel, but it’s clear they still need more talent on the back end next off-season.

I’m always an optimist because I do think that teams can improve over the course of the season, and I’m not especially interested in spending the regular season evaluating the off-season moves. There are enough players here to get the job done, they just have to come together.

October surprise: Five reasons to be excited about the Patriots prospects

The team clearly needs to get its defensive house in order to truly be a legit Super Bowl threat. But at least there is a foundation in place to build upon. And that foundation begins up front. The Patriots right now are No. 11 on our Defensive Hog Index. It’s not an elite defensive front. But it’s getting there, and certainly the unit is MUCH better than it was in 2011, when the Patriots finished the year No. 25 on our Defensive Hog Index. New England stops the run as well as any team in football, surrendering a stingy 3.34 YPA. That’s third best in the NFL. The Patriots boast Vince Wilfork, the rock in the middle, and have surrounded him with a young collection of athletic defenders, including the young all-SEC linebacking corps of Brandon Spikes, who has lit up opponents with big hits this year, 2008 Defensive Rookie of the Year and 2010 Pro Bowler Jerod Mayo and rookie Dont’a Hightower. Chandler Jones, meanwhile, was the NFL’s defensive rookie of the month for September and already has 5.0 sacks this year. The Patriots are not a perfect team, folks. But there are certainly plenty of reasons to think this team will be in the mix when it all gets real serious in January.

The pass game in general is very problematic for them,” the AFC executive said. “They’re getting no pass rush in some of these situations, and with the matchup situation and concerns in coverage, they’ve been exposed on the back end. They’re better against the run than they were last year, but the liability remains there. You block them up – the Jets went max-protect – and the Patriots can’t stop you.

Patriots defense can’t get off the field on third-and-long

October 25, 2012 by Mike Dussault

The Patriots defense has been destroyed by analysts for the better part of three years now for a myriad of specific reasons, and lately the big problem everyone wants to talk about is the back end of the defense.

There’s no question the Pats have struggled against the deep ball, however another area that they’ve had problems in is their defense in third-and-long  situations. For our purposes here we’re defining “long” as 6 or more yards.

Here’s a look at some Patriots teams in the past, and how they’ve fared on 3rd down with 6 or more yards to go. These numbers signify the percent of time the Pats defense failed and gave up a first down:

  • 2001 – 30.2%
  • 2003 – 29.1%
  • 2004 – 28.4%
  • 2007 – 24.8%
  • 2008 – 35.7%
  • 2009 – 28.2%
  • 2010 – 34.5%
  • 2011 – 30.9%
  • 2012 (thru 7 games) – 41.7%

As you can see so far in 2012 getting off the field on third and long has been a problem. And even when you look at the Pats in situations where it’s 3rd-and-7-plus yards they’re still at a 41.0%.

Let’s compare to a few other teams around the NFL this year for some more context:

  • Ravens – 23.6%
  • Saints – 27.9% (32nd in yards/game given up)
  • Bills – 32.7% (32nd in yards allowed)
  • Texans – 15.4% (what a match-up vs Pats O this will be)
  • Jets – 41.1% (well that makes me feel slightly better)
  • Dolphins – 22.0% (what?)

Ironically the Pats have had fewer 3rd-and-longs than any of the other teams mentioned above, which is clearly indicative of how many long balls they’re giving up. But even when they do get teams in a favorable 3rd down situation, where they can force a punt and get the ball back to the offense, they’re not delivering like they have in the past.

Of course for me this comes back to getting more pass rushers on the field in these situations, however at this time the Pats just don’t have the personnel to be able to replace Vince Wilfork with a more up-the-field type.

It seems that Wilfork has been left out there for protection against the run, but it’s not the run that’s been the problem. Just once has a third-and-long been converted via run this year and that was a scramble by Jake Locker. Otherwise no team has even attempted a run when it’s less than 10-yards to go.

Perhaps Myron Pryor is the answer, but who knows if/when he’ll be back and at what capacity. This should surely be an area the Pats need to address during the bye week.

The Patriots have allowed an NFL-worst 38 completions of 20 or more yards through the first seven games of the season, with six more coming Sunday during their overtime win over the Jets. What’s more, nearly all of those big completions have come during scoring drives, 31 of the 38, leading to 18 touchdowns and five field goals. That’s 141 of the 163 points the Patriots have allowed thus far this season. The big plays have been costly.

It’s their biggest concern – Patriots – Boston.com

This just goes back to the point I’ve been making, if the Patriots can just give up 3 passing plays per game instead of the 6 they’re averaging the impact will be huge.

The defense seems predicated on having Vince Wilfork and Kyle Love swallow up double teams, allowing for Brandon Spikes and Jerod Mayo to make plays while edge rushers are allowed to get after the quarterback. As simple as it sounds, it works to perfection time and time again. Spikes and Mayo combined for 21 tackles Sunday and rookie Dont’a Hightower added seven more as well as a 10-yard sack.

The Patriots don’t blitz much, if at all, and don’t get to quarterback Mark Sanchez with the standard rush, which primarily consisted of Chandler Jones, Vince Wilfork, Kyle Love and Rob Ninkovich-or-Jermaine Cunningham. The rush does deliver when it counts on the final play of overtime, but Sanchez still had success with all that time to throw.
