Patriots having trouble defending the middle of the field

Patriots having trouble defending the middle of the field

In what has become an alarming trend, especially noticeable last week against the Bills, the Patriots are struggling more and more defending the middle of the field.

As evidenced by these rankings from Football Outsiders, the Patriots are ranked 11th and 3rd respectively covering #1 and #2 wide receivers. Those are obviously the guys who are usually lined up on the outside of the formation.

As for the other receivers they rank:

  • vs. TE – 26th
  • vs. 3rd/4th WR – 32nd
  • vs. RB – 26th

The struggles of the linebackers in coverage are clear, and that should include the slot corners and box safeties somewhat as well.

But the linebackers are an easy place to focus on. Everyone was high on the all-SEC trio, and they are certainly skilled in a lot of areas, but coverage is certainly not their strength.

The only hope is that Jerod Mayo, the only one with enough speed to excel in coverage, suddenly elevates his game in this area, but given his history I’m not holding my breath.

Perhaps Dane Fletcher might’ve been of assistance in this area. The Pats should definitely look to bring him back next year. But I’d still put a sub-package coverage linebacker/special teamer as a personnel need to be addressed.

My current list of needs for Draft/Free Agency:

  1. Defensive Tackle (penetrator)
  2. Interior Offensive Lineman (center/guard)
  3. Safety (back end type)
  4. Wide Receiver
  5. Coverage Linebacker

Too many problems to choose from – BostonHerald.com

Nice breakdown here of all the breakdowns. Look I know that was a travesty of defense on Sunday, but let’s also chalk it up to just a game where an already suspect defense was off, making it look even worse than it already is. You need to look no further than tackling, something that the Patriots are good at. This defense is what it is and that was a painful game to watch, but they’re really not that bad.

Run game struggles? No easy answers there, as a number of components played a part, from not “setting the edge” on a month’s worth of lost force plays, to poor tackling pursuit angles, to the actual tackling itself, to the quality of the pursuit, to the inability to get off blocks at different times on all three levels. The secondary is its own briar patch, and coverage matchup problems within the linebacker group were every bit as prevalent as guys getting beat at the corner or safety position. Are linebackers not a part of the coverage? Both groups had problems. Multiple corners seemed to develop a newfound love for “peeking,” or taking their eyes off their coverage for just enough time to lose their receiver — something that through all the growing pains thus far with this young group, I hadn’t seen as a persistent issue.

One of the biggest things that bothered me about this game were the coverage busts in the red area. There were two uncontested TDs by the Buffalo Bills – to Scott Chandler and Donald Jones. Both touchdowns were a result of a lack of communication. The Buffalo Bills formed offensive sets that put their receivers in close proximity that caused traffic problems and forced communication. The proper adjustments are not being communicated. Uncontested TDs are a sign of an undisciplined defense.

The 62 snaps for slot CB Marquice Cole were easily a season-high, as one could view him as being rewarded for a strong performance against the Rams on Oct. 28. Entering the game, Cole had played a total of 41 defensive snaps for the entire season.

It appeared that when the Patriots went with a single-high safety in their defense, more often than not it was Devin McCourty, not Steve Gregory. The strategy should not come as much of a surprise, as Gregory, when previously active, struggled at times to keep the play in front of him, and McCourty has done well to do exactly that since becoming a safety. The Patriots’ secondary again was the culprit of allowing 300-plus yards passing, but if there was a silver lining – perhaps there was not in the eyes of some – the team did not allow any big plays over the top. McCourty helps to build the umbrella on the defense.

Patriots defensive drive summaries vs. Bills

Hard to put much of a positive spin on this one, with three dominant defensive stands, and six where the Bills moved the ball and either scored or turned it over.

The only solace I can take is that the Patriots were just playing bad, and a lot of their mistakes were due to sloppiness especially with missed tackles. They should be able to clean that stuff up, but top to bottom probably their worst game of the season, especially for the young guys like Hightower and Wilson.

Breaking Down Patriots’ Pass Rush Concerns: Where Is New England’s Pressure? | Bleacher Report – Mike Dussault

New article up on Bleacher Report from me Mike D.!

Schematically, the Patriots shifted their defense to a lighter 4-3 front featuring Vince Wilfork and Kyle Love, two traditional nose tackle-types in the old 3-4, in the middle. The advantage is that the Patriots now have at least five athletic linebacker-types on the field at all times, and, in theory, should be able to rush the passer on any down. The key to this switch has been Rob Ninkovich, who, despite being smaller than a traditional Patriots defensive end like Ty Warren, has been able to hold up in the run game. Ninkovich has been timely with his big plays, but the Pats still need a more consistent pass rush from him.

But it was even more that ranked this victory in such lofty status over the past 14 years, as it was how the Patriots achieved the end result that was so impressive. Their physicality shined, and a commitment to the running game was a change from the norm. The defense got back to its turnover-producing […]
