defense

November 20, 2013 by Mike Dussault

Through 10 games, the pass defense numbers stand in stark contrast to where they were last year. At this point in 2012, the Patriots had allowed 289.7 passing yards per game, 30th in the league. This season, that stands at 229.2, 12th in the league. With the slippage in run defense (due in large part to the fact that the Patriots have lost stalwarts like Wilfork and Kelly), the pass defense was a point of pride through much of the first half of the season. And Talib helped silence Roddy White, Jimmy Graham and Vincent Jackson, cementing a rep as one of the best corners in the league.

Big game for the base 3-4 defense with Duron Harmon doing a pretty good job filling in for Steve Gregory.

Good breakdown of who the key cogs on defense are. Joe Vellano and Alfonzo Dennard are two surprise snap leaders.

On 53 dropbacks, the Patriots blitzed just nine times. Roethlisberger was 3-of-8 with 1 touchdown, 2 interceptions and a sack on those plays. The touchdown came midway through the fourth quarter as receiver Jerricho Cotchery shook linebacker Brandon Spikes and made a beautiful one-handed grab on second-and-goal from the 6.

Jamie Collins takes a dip in playing time as it looks like Andre Carter will be a major contributor. No doubt about it, this is Devin McCourty’s defense now.

According to ESPN Stats & Information tracking, the Patriots had sent five or more rushers on 59 snaps through the first seven games of the season, which was an average of 12 percent of their overall snaps. That ranked them 29th in the NFL in terms of blitzing. But against the Dolphins, the Patriots sent five or more rushers 29 times. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a similar total Sunday against the Steelers, because similar to the Dolphins, their offensive line has struggled at times this season.

Thinking beyond just the statistical metrics, Vereen is an intriguing player for the Patriots offense, a unit that has undergone some turnover this offseason. He flashed at times during his second season, particularly as a pass-catcher with exceptional run-after-catch ability. Perhaps the biggest question entering the 2013 season is how the Patriots’ passing attack will […]
