Bill Belichick on red zone, key plays on D – ESPN

Bill Belichick on red zone, key plays on D – ESPN

If you want to sum up the loss, these are three good plays to take the blame. It’s clear they missed Gronk in the red zone, as expected. And had it not been for an insane touchdown catch by Hooman, their red zone issues would’ve looked even worse. Red zone and third down will be the areas the Pats must get right in the coming weeks.

Patriots snaps: CB Marquice Cole targeted quickly – ESPN

Patriots snaps: CB Marquice Cole targeted quickly – ESPN

When Cole came on late in the second quarter for the injured Arrington, the Dolphins quickly targeted him and produced a 39-yard catch-and-run touchdown by Mike Wallace. As part of a game plan that had top corner Talib playing inside for most of the game, Arrington’s injury created a situation where Cole, more of a natural slot corner, aligned on the outside against Wallace. That was a matchup the Dolphins took advantage of, and led to the question: What made Cole a better option than the rookie Ryan, or even McCourty (with Duron Harmon entering at safety)?

If the New England Patriots can’t find a way to get off the field on third down, it will end their season. For this offense to score points they will need as many possessions as possible. If teams continue to convert on third down, it will keep Tom Brady and the offense off the field. Especially if the defense continues to fall in their turnover rankings.

Really think the defense will look a lot better once Dennard is back in there full time. He’s really been underrated the last two seasons, and not far behind Talib. They also need better pass rush from their sub-packages. I love Andre Carter, but wouldn’t mind seeing Michael Buchanan get back in there with another shot. Pats need to do something different on third downs this week.

Film breakdown of Patriots win over the Browns – Sports – The Boston Globe

Film breakdown of Patriots win over the Browns – Sports – The Boston Globe

Sad but true:

Add it all up — backups subbing for Pro Bowlers, defensive backs struggling through injuries and having too many communication errors, and the front four not getting to the passer — and you have a defense that has allowed 414 yards and 28.6 points over their last five games.

Pats defensive adjustment vs. Browns

Love when Matt Chatham busts out the diagrams.

Instead of adding a fifth defensive back against all three-receiver packages, the Patriots sometimes subbed out a safety (Duron Harmon/Steve Gregory) in favor of a third cornerback (Kyle Arrington). So while they technically remained in a base defense with four players in the secondary, it had a sub-package element to it.

Love this new Bruschi defensive index, really another quality ranking system like DVOA that goes beyond simple yardage allowed.

Pats are down to 20th, 3rd downs are their trouble spot (30th). Red Zone is below average as well (20th).

I still can’t believe they lost this game in 2009.
