Dane Fletcher

August 21, 2013 by Mike Dussault

One of my main focuses this year was to work on my pass coverage and really nail that down,” Fletcher said. “I feel like I’ve been doing well and (there’s) always room to improve.

Jamie Collins has gotten a lot of attention as a potential solution to the pass coverage problems in the middle of the field, but Fletcher could be an even bigger piece of the puzzle early this season.

It’s just been a grind, because I’m not the kind of guy who sits back and takes time off,” Fletcher said. “I’ve put in all the positive energy I could. I think the proof will be in the pudding when next year arises and people and all the fans will see how much time I’ve spent in the offseason preparing for this year. I’m putting everything I have in to it, which I feel I owe to myself, my family and Patriots fans.

Dane Fletcher reports Dane Fletcher has re-signed with the Patriots

January 31, 2013 by Mike Dussault

Another great move for the Pats before the 2012 season is even done. They really could’ve used Fletcher’s coverage skills in 2012, and I wouldn’t rule out Fletcher eating into Brandon Spikes’ snaps at middle linebacker in 2013, even in the base defense. He should make a big push to lockdown the nickel coverage linebacker spot as well. Good news!

New England Patriots training camp ups and downs – ESPN Boston

Good recap of who the ESPN Boston crew thinks are up and down so far in practice. One of my old favorites that hasn’t gotten much love here lately is Dane Fletcher, who they had as an “up”.

Fletcher is one of three players who have appeared on the first team of the Patriots’ core four special-teams units. A prominent special-teams role can be enough to earn a player a spot on a team by itself, but Fletcher has shown up as a linebacker, too. He displayed both power and shiftiness in a blitz pickup drill on Sunday, held down run fits during live 11-on-11 action, and hasn’t shied from contact. The Patriots have developed some depth in the linebacking core, but 2011 starter Brandon Spikes remains extremely limited in practice. That has opened the door for Fletcher to receive increased reps, and he’s answered the bell.

Since the (first) day that Dane has been here, he’s worked really hard. He puts a lot into it. He studies hard, he prepares hard, he works hard. The biggest thing with him is just being able to stay on the field. He’s been held up a little bit with some of the injuries, but he’s a smart guy, he’s athletic, he runs well, he’s strong. The more you can play that position, the more confidence that you’re going to gain. I’d say you’ve noticed just in his play, it looks like he’s played a little more assertively, a little more aggressively. Part of that is he probably has a little more confidence in not only his health, but maybe a little more confidence in what he’s doing. Since he’s been here from day one, he’s made a conscious effort to improve as a football player and get better. He puts his head down, he works hard and when he’s been on the field, he’s made the most of his chances.

Patriots defense could use Dane Fletcher

It’s hard to know for sure why Dane Fletcher went from being able to play with the thumb injury he suffered in the preseason to being absent from games and practice since before the bye week due to it. Probably safe to assume he either re-injured it or it was more severe than initially thought and needed surgery.

Regardless he’s certainly someone the Patriots defense could use right now. My feelings on Gary Guyton are well documented around here, and with the Pats struggling with coverage on tight ends and in the middle of the field there’s no question the speedy and sure-tackling Fletcher would certainly be useful. Fingers crossed he’s back out there soon…
