Patriots Notebook: Chandler Jones gaining confidence – CBSSports.com

As Jones fielded questions Friday, he stood at his locker without a shirt on. Sensing an opportunity to dig into the rookie, Tom Brady shot across the room and let him have it. “Jeez, Chandler. Put a shirt on,” Brady shouted. “Seriously, you’re going to get (strength coach) Harold (Nash) fired.” Brady was clearly joking, but Jones immediately became frantic and asked everyone around him if Brady was talking to him. When he finished taking inquiries, Jones, his tail between his legs, meandered over to Brady to apologize. “Tom, I’m sorry,” Jones said. “I didn’t have a chance to put a shirt on. They rushed me.”

Chandler Jones up to tall task – BostonHerald.com

Chandler Jones up to tall task – BostonHerald.com

Good breakdown from Jeff Howe on Chandler Jones’ opening game.

While Jones is viewed as the Patriots’ pass-rushing answer, he is very good against the run. He stunted inside in the first quarter to stop Chris Johnson for a 3-yard loss, and Jones also works off his blocks with ease when the ball goes in his direction. Jones’ ability against the run keeps him on the field for all three downs.

This week’s Bottom Line Player of the Week is an easy choice for me. It’s a guy that I wasn’t overly impressed with based on what was available of YouTube highlights. A guy I put on my big board somewhat reluctantly. And a guy that suddenly became the fastest riser just a week before the draft.

Yes, I’m talking about Chandler Jones. Even after the Pats selected him, and pundits like Mike Lombardi and Mike Mayock were saying he could end up being the best player in the draft, we all still thought it would take some time for Jones to find his way. He needed to get stronger. He wasn’t explosive.

Well what a different a few months make. Jones seized his opportunity when Rob Ninkovich missed a couple training camp practices and he’s barely left the field since. We’ve known all along that a true elephant defensive end in the mold of Willie McGinest is the kind of player the Patriots truly needed to do all the things they want to be able to do.

Andre Carter was a great addition last year, but we knew he wasn’t the ideal right end because he wasn’t really suited to play in space. But now Jones has left us all saying “Andre who?” just one game into the 2012 season.

Jones has shown up in every aspect of the game. From getting pressure, to playing stout and aggressive at the point of attack. He is going to be a cornerstone in this defense for a long, long time, so this should be his first of many Bottom Line Player of the Weeks.

5 takeaways from the Patriots-Titans – Extra Points – Boston.com

Chandler Jones is the real deal – There’s no more wondering about it, Jones has shown what he can do – and that’s cause havoc. In his first game, the rookie defensive end recorded a strip-sack, a tackle for a loss, as well as a couple of hurries. It was more than enough to make the Titans take note of his presence and the rest of the world to stop and applaud him on a job well done. What you saw on the field was a playmaker with a quick burst off the line, able to use his hands to get leverage, and a bit of tenacity to chase down a scrambling quarterback. Yes, Jones certainly has the tools to be an elite pass rusher in the NFL.

Jones, on the other hand, was a bit more of a traditional prospect. He had a few games where he’d vanish, but pretty much the story with him was that when he played he’d dominate, but he had to battle through some injuries. In 2012, Jones missed five games, but then, coming off a bye for Syracuse, completely sandbagged West Virginia as he came out and blitzkrieged an unsuspecting WVU offensive line. Keep in mind West Virginia won 10 games and scored 70 points in their BCS game, and they absolutely had no answer for Jones the entire game.

Alright, Chandler Jones’ look is growing on me. And yes, maybe his play the other night has something to do with it.

Should get a really good gauge on the rookies today and tomorrow, especially:

Patriots defensive end Chandler Jones vs. Saints tackles Jermon Bushrod and Zach Strief. Jones has already impressed in the early portion of training camp, and has the chance to continue to do so against a pair of powerful Saints tackles. Should the teams participate in a 1-on-1 drill with the offensive and defensive linemen, expects plenty of eyes to be on Jones.
