Carpenter’s Return Not Necessarily Because of Hightower Injury :Pats Pub

Good take from Steve:

The one glaring weakness for the Patriots front seven thus far this year has been the coverage gaps in the linebackers. I thought Carpenter did a good job with that this summer, which is why most all of the Pats beat writers had him on the team. Regardless of how long Hightower is out, if at all this week, Carpenter fills a valuable role. When the Patriots go to their sub-packages, Carpenter can hang with the tight ends much better than any of their starters. I think the coaches over-estimated the other LBers ability to cover. Carpenter’s return will remedy that quickly.

Star performer of the day. Bobby Carpenter. The linebacker intercepted an underthrown Tom Brady pass intended for Wes Welker down the middle of the field, combining good range and solid hands.

I just don’t know what to make of Carpenter. He could be starting or cut and I would be surprised by neither. Ceiling? Tracy White upgrade.

One player who received a lot of playing time during the offseason practices for the Patriots was former Cowboys, Dolphins, and Lions linebacker Bobby Carpenter. It didn’t hurt his cause that Brandon Spikes has been out since having offseason knee surgery, but they don’t play the same position. Spikes is a middle linebacker for the Patriots, while Carpenter can play both outside spots in a 4-3. Jerod Mayo is the weak-side linebacker, so that means Carpenter is in the mix on the strong side. Expect first-round pick Dont’a Hightower to have a say in that at some point. At the least, Carpenter is going to play a large role in coverage. He’s the only legitimate cover linebacker the Patriots have after Gary Guyton departed.

I have two issues with this quote from Bedard.

1. When was Guyton ever “legitimate”?

2. What about Dane Fletcher?

Otherwise I remember everyone clamoring for Carpenter when he came out in 2006. That was about the time the Pats defense was officially “old and slow” and needed a youth infusion at linebacker. Not sure if the Pats can suddenly now make Carpenter into something special, but it looks like he’ll have a chance until we start getting healthy.

Offseason pickup Bobby Carpenter continues to see reps with the first team defense, with Rob Ninkovich continuing to practice with the defensive linemen.

Observations from Thursday practice – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston

Very curious as to where Carpenter is playing, probably SLB or MLB with Spikes out and Ninkovich playing DE now.

Adding Injury to Insult: Burkhead and Bentley to IR

Remember yesterday when I dove into the All-22 and came away with one headline silver lining which was Ja’whaun Bentley looked really good in places, including his interception where he ran like we haven’t seen a linebacker run since the days of Jamie Collins. Welp, today Bentley along with Rex Burkhead were sent to IR. […]
