Pats Posits: We’re On to Tom Brady

October 2, 2016 by Mike Dussault

tom bradyAnd that’s a wrap on Deflategate.

Tom Brady is back Patriots fans, just as the dreaded thoughts of “the end” were starting to seep into our consciousness, here comes TB12 to (we hope) the rescue.

The Patriots laid a goose egg on the scoreboard and on the field against the Bills, losing 16-0. For every bit they looked flawless against the Texans, they looked equally flawed against the Rex and Rob Ryan Wonder Twins.

But it was just another example of how even when the Pats get dominated, they never really get blown out.

Jacoby Brissett looked very much like an overwhelmed rookie and the offense was shut out at home for the first time since Drew Bledsoe‘s 1993 rookie season.

Fine. Whatever. Now Brady’s back, Gronk is getting healthier and this Garopposset Offense will soon be long forgotten as a footnote to the 2016 season.

But the defense was lit up for almost 400 yards and didn’t calm any nerves I had this week about how inconsistent they’ve been. They were terrible on third down. Allowed the Bills 36 minutes of possession. Why have they been so up-and-down in the first quarter of the season?

More on that and everything else in a “First Loss of the Season” edition of the Posits…

New England Patriots Gameplan: Week 4 vs. Buffalo Bills

September 30, 2016 by Mike Dussault

This is it. The last Brady-less game of the 2016 season (we hope). Yes, there are plenty of questions surrounding who will be under center for the Pats in this one, but ultimately this is a tepid Bills offense that should never ever waltz into Foxboro and pull out a win, even we had good ole’ Tommy Hodson back there taking snaps.

Rex Ryan always makes things interesting and despite just a 4-11 record against the Pats, the average margin of victory in the last six games against Rex is just 4.7 points. Last year the Pats beat Ryan’s Bills by 40-32 (week 2) and 20-13 (week 11). So despite the records, this game will probably be interesting.

What has made them most interesting is Rex’s schemes against Tom Brady. Recently this has involved disguising his blitzers while dropping a majority of players into zone coverage. Often times this has slowed Brady down, but as Jeff Howe points out, Brady has still done as well as anyone (which isn’t saying all that much considering the shitlist that is quarterbacks who faced Rex at least five times):

Brady has completed 60.1 percent of his passes against Ryan’s Jets and Bills for an average of 282 yards per game to go along with 27 touchdowns and eight interceptions. His 91.2 passer rating against Ryan’s Jets (2009-14) was the highest among all quarterbacks to face him at least five times.

So now what happens with (probably) Jimmy Garoppolo or (possibly) Jacoby Brissett? The Bills have plenty of defenders who can wreck a gameplan, starting with Kyle Williams. The Patriots will need a sound offensive game from whoever their QB is to keep the Bills at bay.

On the other side of the ball, the Patriots defense finally showed what they’re capable of against the Houston Texans, pitching their first meaningful shutout since 2009. Now they must contain Tyrod Taylor and LeSean McCoy. If the Patriots defense is truly going to live up to their perceived talent level, this is another game they should be gunning for a shutout. Expectations are that high.

Here’s the gameplan for capping off the Brady suspension in style, with a win over our old pal Rexy, (who’s coming off a win btw)…

Pretty telling Rex Ryan stat: Since 2012, his teams are 4-18 after a win.

Week 4 Scouting Report: Buffalo Bills

September 28, 2016 by Adam Magnacca

After an incredibly satisfying trouncing of the Texans, the Bills all of a sudden might not be the cakewalk we thought them to be. Sexy Rexy’s squad showed some life in a defeat of the Arizona Cardinals. Fun Fact of the Day, that was Chandler Jones’ first loss to Buffalo since he’s been in the league (not counting Week 17 of the 2014 season where several starters sat). Now it’s time to find out if Buffalo actually has any fight in them.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Bills aka “The Super Ryan Brothers”

Injury Alerts

Patriots:

Jimmy Garappolo is still dealing with an AC joint injury. While the arrow is pointing up on his recovery (Garappolo was at practice on Tuesday), I wouldn’t anticipate him playing. If he does play, expect JFG to be limited in his throwing.

Jacoby Brissett has injured his right thumb according to multiple reputable outlets. However, the severity is up for debate. Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that Brissett would be fine to throw. Brisket was also at practice on Tuesday. Expect to see Brissett out there for the start

Dont’a Hightower was inactive last week and the defense posted a shutout so obviously Hightower was the problem *sarcasm emoji.* Having him back would be a help to the defense and free up Jamie Collins to do more. Keep an eye on the injury report today for his status.

Rob Gronkowski played last game for the first time this season but was obviously limited. Coaches seemed to have him on a snap count. You figure this week he’ll be a little more effective and have a little more juice in him considering the 10 days off between games. Hopefully, we see more of the Gronk that will make Sexy Rexy quiver in his boots.

Jonathan Cooper is probably a ghost. Who knows when we’ll see him.

Bills:

Sammy Watkins is the stud Buffalo receiver who has struggled to get healthy since the offseason. He had surgery on a stress fracture in his foot. He played Weeks 1 and 2 but it was reported he was dealing with significant pain, explaining his low numbers. Watkins was inactive last week. He’s one who, if he plays, doesn’t look to be very effective.

Key Matchups:

Patriots:

vs. WR1: 14th —–  vs. Logan Ryan vs. Sammy Watkins

vs. WR2: 20th —– Malcolm Butler vs. Marquise Goodwin

vs. other WR: 16th —– Justin Coleman vs. Robert Woods

vs. RB: 21st —– Jamie Collins vs. LeSean McCoy

Bills:

vs. WR1: 30th —– Julian Edelman vs. Stephon Gilmore

vs. WR2: 23rd —– Chris Hogan vs. Ronald Darby

vs. TE: 12th —– Rob Gronkowski vs. Aaron Williams

vs. RB: 11th —– James White vs. Preston Brown

What’s at stake?

New England’s second division game in four weeks is of course an important game. Winning the first meeting puts less weight on the next meeting. However, as many have pointed out, the team is playing with house money. A win here would provide a huge confidence boost to the team for Tom Brady’s return. However, a 3-1 record with arguably the best QB of all time returning to the team is an incredible place to be. Also, an L here wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world. It would take the pressure of 16-0 off of the team, which is not to be underrated.

Early thoughts:

I think it is fair to say NE should be equipped to handle Buffalo. They have had their DB depth tested before this season with the Cardinals and play the matchup game better than anyone else. The only worry is that the Ryan Brothers are able to confuse whatever young QB is under center for the Patriots. Although, NE won’t give Brissett anything confusing to have to decipher on the field so any trickeration on Buffalo’s part might be for naught.

Patriots Monday Morning Wakeup Call

September 26, 2016 by Mike Dussault

Tom Brady GIFPlenty to digest from the weekend’s slate of games. Most importantly, the Patriots now have a two game lead in the AFC East. Without Tom Brady. Yup.

One more against the Bills at home, and then our sweet prince shall return and all will be right with the football world once again.

Across the AFC the usual suspects are rising to the top of heap early in the season.

PatsPropaganda AFC East Rivals Preview

September 7, 2016 by Rick Starke

The AFC East has been dominated by the Patriots for the past 15 years (aka the Brady/Belichick era), to a degree that hasn’t been otherwise seen in NFL history. The Patriots won the division title in 13 of those years. The two losses, to the Jets in 2002 and the Dolphins in 2008, came down to tiebreakers.

That doesn’t mean that division titles are always all but guaranteed, that division games aren’t still typically a bit tougher than non division games (math on that at the end of the article), or that we shouldn’t pay attention to what is happening with those other teams in the offseason.

Let’s take a look at the coaching staff of each team, the biggest “skill” names on each side of the ball (non offensive linemen, basically), and some of the offseason moves they’ve made.

New England Patriots Gameplan: Week 11 vs. Buffalo Bills

November 20, 2015 by Mike Dussault

It’s been just two months since the Patriots last saw the Bills and put 500 yards up on them, but now the Patriots are a different team, especially on offense, and must find new avenues to deal with Rex Ryan.

The good news is that Sebastian Vollmer
, Marcus Cannon
and Tre Jackson all returned to practice this week, meaning the Pats could have a healthy offensive line for the first time since losing Nate Solder in Week 5. Since Solder went down it’s been a tackle apocalypse and we certainly don’t want to keep rolling out the makeshift offensive line against a defensive front like Buffalo’s.

The Bills are coming off their biggest win of the season over the Jets and have won two-straight. They’re currently 3-1 in the division and very much in the thick of the wild card hunt, so this will be a confident team that should play loose.

Here’s the gameplan to put them down in front of a national audience.

image

Offensive Gameplan

Julian Edelman and Dion Lewis accounted for 247 yards and three touchdowns against the Bills in the first game and now the Pats have to figure out a way to replace that production. The biggest issue is that when you look back over the years at how the offense has faired against Rex Ryan’s defenses, it’s the shifty receivers, tight ends and running backs doing most of the damage in the passing game.

Outside receivers like Randy Moss, Brandon LaFell and even Aaron Dobson are just complimentary pieces in these gameplans usually. What gets it done against Rex’s scheme are the quick man-beaters and I wonder how the Pats can adjust without their most reliable man-beater.

The Bills will likely overcommit to take Gronkowski out of the game. Which means LaFell, Danny Amendola, Aaron Dobson and Keshawn Martin will have to step up and play bigger roles.

By the same token, the Pats must find some passing production with their running backs. They didn’t do much with James White or Brandon Bolden against the Giants, but this gameplan is going to require them to be involved. The Bills are 32nd in the NFL covering running backs by Football Outsiders’ DVOA metric. They must be attacked there.

The Pats ran the ball just 15 times in Week 2, a sign of respect for the Bills’ defense, but with reduced passing weapons will they be forced to feed LeGarrette Blount a bit more? Blount was just coming off his one week suspension in Week 2, and that could’ve been a factor as well.

Still, this is Rex Ryan and we know how he will attack Brady and it’s often effective. Their corners Ronald Darby and Stephon Gilmore are playing very well right now, and you have to wonder if one of them sees significant time on Gronk, likely Gilmore.

There’s no question LaFell and Amendola are the big keys if the Bills are actually able to take Gronk away. But the two guys I’m more interested in are Dobson/Martin and Scott Chandler. Dobson intrigues me with his size, but no one knows for sure if he or Martin is higher on the depth chart at the moment.

Yes, the Pats lose a significant player without Edelman, but what they’ll be forced to evolve to is a bigger lineup. This could be the game we’ve all been waiting for from Chandler.

But even if it’s not him, someone is going to have to step up and play a bigger role, especially on third down. If I was Rex I would double Amendola and Gronk on third downs and force Brady to go anywhere else.

image

Defensive Gameplan

The Bills moved the ball right down the field on their opening drive in Week 2 with the Pats playing their usual Cover-1 Man defense, but then the Pats shifted to a Cover-3 for most of the rest of the game and it shut the Bills down until they started letting Tyrod Taylorout of the pocket.

Yes, the BIlls had three touchdown drives with some explosive plays to make the game appear closer than it was. Still, those plays are concerning and should give the Bills more confidence coming into this one than they might’ve had if the Pats kept the throttle down when they were up 37-13.

The Patriots do prefer man defense, so it will be interesting to see if they start out immediately with the Cover-3 coverage that was successful for them. With mobile quarterbacks it’s often better to be in zone anyway since all the coverage defenders aren’t totally consumed with their receiver, allowing the quarterback to make a break for it when he sees an opening.

For that same reason expect a steady and disciplined pass rush designed to keep Taylor in the pocket with one spy dropping off the rush and mirroring him.

But the biggest aspect of the Bills is their run game, ranked #1 by Football Outsiders DVOA and 2nd overall in rushing yards. Meanwhile, the Patriots’ run defense has been outstanding in recent weeks after being a big question mark early in the season and are currently ranked #1 in rushing yards allowed but only 12th in DVOA. This is likely where the game is won or lost and will definitely prove whether or not the Patriots’ run defense is legitimately one of the best in the NFL.

Shut down McCoy and Williams, and force Taylor to beat you from the pocket on long third downs. That’s the recipe for success.

One other interesting area is the Bills are just behind the Pats, ranking 6th in turnover differential. The Patriots often rely on turnovers and if the Bills play as safe with the ball as they have been in recent weeks they might hang around until the end.

Points of Emphasis

1. Stop the Run: Easily a cliche that could be used every week, but this week it’s an essential key given the run game is the lifeblood of the Bills offense. Malcom Brown and Alan Branch have been outstanding in recent weeks, as have the other rotational DTs. This week we’ll see just how good they really are.

2. Brady-to-Chandler: With Gronk likely doubled and Amendola likely to be locked in a tough matchup with Darby, the Pats must find another reliable option to carry them to January. Scott Chandler has been just a bit out of sync with Brady so far, hitting a few good plays, but also missing some. Chandler could be the forgotten man in Buffalo’s gameplan, opening the door for a breakout game against his former team.

3. Jame White, Now is the Time: For similar reasons to the matchups above, and the Bills’ struggles to cover running backs in the passing game, this is a good time to see what we have with James White. He was solid in a limited role against the Giants, but I’d love to see him get thrown into the fire against the Bills. He might very well make some noise.

4. Disciplined Rush: If they’re stopping the run, the next step is to keep Tyrod Taylor in the pocket and few teams have the kind of discipline to do so like the Patriots do. The Pats shut down Taylor last time until he started getting out of the pocket and making plays downfield. Containing him is vital.

5. Win: Always the fifth key because it’s all that matters, a win here would essentially seal the AFC East title and it’s not even December yet. But most important is finding out how the offense will evolve now without Edelman. They need another threat to step up to stress the defense. Whether it’s White, Chandler, Dobson or Martin who will have Brady’s trust? Then, when Edelman gets back for the playoffs, the Pats will be even deeper and more difficult to stop.

Prediction: Patriots 24, Bills 9
