“I’m sitting there on the bench, just beside myself, burning with frustration, and I look over and Bill Belichick is walking toward me,” Kobe recalled. “I had never met him. Never spoken to him. He had courtside seats across from our bench, and with 20 seconds left in the game, he came over and said, ‘Don’t you worry about this. I know what you are going through. We just lost a tough one ourselves [to the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII]. Just bounce back. Be ready next year.’ "He didn’t have to say that. The clock was winding down, we were getting ready to walk off. I thought it was really cool. Respect across our professions.” Since then, Belichick and Bryant habitually have talked shop when Kobe comes to Boston. Last season, Belichick visited the Lakers’ locker room and shared some pearls of coaching wisdom.

Patriots 2012 Season in Review

Bill Belichick (205) moved into a tie with Marty Schottenheimer for sixth place all time in career wins. Belichick (18) needs one more postseason victory to tie Don Shula (19) for second place in postseason wins. Tom Landry (20) is in first place. Belichick has five conference titles and needs one more to match Don Shula, who led his teams to six Super Bowls.

Former 49ers head coach Bill Walsh’s first book lives on as a Super Bowl road map – ESPN The Magazine – ESPN

Great read on what is the greatest book on football ever written. While I don’t own one I did take a copy out from my local library a couple years ago. It’s as dense as they say. I need to go back and take another look…

The book reinforced Belichick’s own belief in detailed planning, which is why he calls it and Jack Welch and the GE Way the two most influential books of his career.

Bill Belichick schools the media on 3-4 vs. 4-3 and why debate is ‘media fabrication’

Bill Belichick schools the media on 3-4 vs. 4-3 and why debate is ‘media fabrication’

“Honestly, I think that’s something that is a media fabrication. There are a lot of different alignments out there. You see 4-3 teams use odd spacing. You see 3-4 teams use even spacing. You have 11 players, you can put them in various positions. Whether you want to put it on the pre-game depth chart as one thing or another, I think is a little bit overrated.”

Why is it overrated?

“You play different fronts, you play different spacing, and you teach the techniques of your defense,” Belichick explained. “That is what consistent, techniques that are taught in different defensive systems, whether those teams go from three-man line to a four-man line, or a four-man line to an odd spacing line, or overs-to-unders, or unders-to-overs, or over-wides, whatever you want to call it. They will continue to play the same fundamental techniques as they’ve been teaching for the entire year, for the most part. I think that’s what teaching defensive fundamental football is about. It’s about fundamentals. Wherever you put them, you’ve got to people other people in complementary places, however you decide to do that.

At about the same time Shannon Sharpe was tearing Belichick a new one for not performing for the cameras, Ravens coach John Harbaugh was processing a postgame conversation with Belichick he said he’ll “treasure” forever. “So classy, so gracious,” is how Harbaugh described Belichick to Peter King of NBC and Sports Illustrated. “Complimentary about how we played, about our game plan, about how tough it is to play us.”

Usually it’s tough to pick a Patriots player of the week after a loss but this week it’s pretty easy. Brandon Spikes was a force all over the field on Sunday, with 7 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, 2 QB hits, and a huge forced fumble that should’ve stolen an impossible victory for the Patriots. […]
