Bill Belichick Conference Call Transcript

Q: Would you agree with the assessment that the blitz was a greater part of the defensive plan in this game than we’ve seen in the first seven games of the season?

BB: I think it kind of worked out that way yesterday. Part of it was, I think the conditions played a little bit of a part in that but also the game plan. It looked like Miami was having more success throwing the ball in the inside part of the field on shorter throws. When we were able to pressure with a middle of the field safety then more of those throws went to the perimeter, which were harder. Alfonzo [Dennard] and Logan [Ryan] and Devin [McCourty] and Kyle [Arrington] all made real good plays or were right there on the coverage on the sideline. It just seemed more evident as the game went on that when we pressured and gave that look that [Ryan] Tannehill was going to try to get the ball there as opposed to on the inside part of the field and it was just tougher to throw and our guys were doing a good job defending it. Logan broke up the route to [Charles] Clay there before the half going down the sideline and Kyle had one right in front of our bench and Logan had one to [Mike] Wallace there right in front of their bench and Alfonzo was right there on a couple back-shoulder throws. I think as we had some success with it and it became apparent kind of what they were going to do with it or it looked like what their plan on it was, we felt like that was a good option for us. A couple times we got pressure and he had to hold the ball for a second and we were able to hit him so that helped it out too.

I think we’re privileged to have, probably, the finest coach and the finest quarterback, and we happen to have them at the same time  – Robert Kraft

I think overall we didn’t give up a lot of yardage in the passing game. Most of what we did give up was on third down so it’s kind of a double problem there but giving up the yardage on third down led to the conversions which then led to [52] runs. We just collectively, as a defense, if we could just improve our third-down play from what it was last week, that would have made things look a lot better in that game.

He was always very poised and always had a real good vision in the game. Even after, it could be a bad play that happened or an interception or a turnover or something, he would come to the sideline and say, ‘OK, let’s talk about what happened on that play.’ He would very clearly say, ‘This is what I saw. This is what happened. This is what this guy did, this is what this guy did, this is what the safeties did, this middle linebacker was here. This is what I saw on the route.’ Then you go back and look at the film and all those things happened. The six, seven, eight, nine things that he described were pretty much the way the play unfolded. I think that’s something that really was one of Tom’s greatest strengths, is his ability to see the field, remain calm, remain poised even though the stadium may be going crazy if we’re on the road or the situation- we may only have couple seconds to work with or whatever the circumstances are. He does a very good job of knowing what the situation but not getting consumed by it and focusing on the execution of that particular play or sequence of plays. I think that’s one of his greatest strengths as a player.

Q: Chris Jones played every snap defensively yesterday. How would you assess his performance?

BB: “Chris, as you mentioned, he got a lot of playing time yesterday. I think he was in there for every play, that’s right. Chris is a smart kid. He came in and picked things up pretty quickly. His play time has increased a little bit each week. I think he’s athletic, he runs well, he has good playing strength, he has a little bit of quickness in the pass rush and overall, he’s got I think decent skills in there. Look, it’s not perfect, there are certainly a lot of things that he can improve on. But I thought he and Joe [Vellano] both have given us, given their amount of experience and all the things they’ve had to deal with, in terms of the types of offenses that we’ve played and so forth, some of the payers in there, like Jahri Evans, pretty good player there and [Ben] Grubbs, that they’ve done a good job of hanging in there and being relatively productive.

Patchung to the face! With Safety Josh Barrett out Chung’s the only drafted safety on our roster. Barrett was a seventh rounder, the rest were undrafted free agents developed internally or with the Jets. I don’t know whether to say wow or yikes.
