Brady and Belichick are 18-7 in the playoffs together entering Sunday’s game, which is their 11th trip to the postseason in the past 13 years. The other three head coaches who will be working in the final four this weekend – Denver’s John Fox, Seattle’s Pete Carroll and San Francisco’s Jim Harbaugh – are a combined 16-11 in the NFL postseason, with 14 playoff berths.

Disguising is certainly a big part of the game and is important, but it’€™s not as important as playing what you have called is. “If you can’€™t play what you have, then it doesn’t matter if you disguise it or not, it’€™s probably not going to be very good, but that’€™s the issue, they don’€™t make it easy for you as much as you want to disguise, sometimes they put you in a bind.”

It Is What It Is » Bill Belichick on Salk & Holley: Broncos ‘don’t make it easy’ for teams to disguise defense

More coming on this on Thursday in my B/R-ticle, but it seemed like the Pats pretty much played the Broncos straight up defensively the first time, mostly in Cover 1 Robber, or Cover 2 Man.

This allowed them to send some blitzes in the second half but the Broncos also adjusted by running more man-beating plays with crossing routes and rubs.

Overall the Pats just haven’t had this kind of man defense capability across the board ever. There are ways to beat man defense, but it makes it more about winning matchups for the wide receivers than when you’re in zone and you’re hoping Peyton Manning makes the wrong read or a bad throw.

It’s a tribute to Belichick, and to his offensive coordinator, Josh McDaniels (and to Brady, quite frankly, because he won’t squawk about turning and handing it off 46 times), that the offensive transition hasn’t grounded the team. When Belichick looks back on his career, whatever happens Sunday in Denver, he’ll know that this season defined what he was as a coach. He did what the skill level of his 53 players called for him to do. He forced no square pegs into round holes. It’s the definition of what a good coach is.

Even the Bill Belichick haters in the media have given up, because to see what they’ve done this year, with everything they’ve been faced with, that’s really saying something.

While other teams keep on shaking up their coaching staffs and organizations, the Patriots are shaking their heads. Since the day they hired Bill Belichick as their head coach in 2000, other NFL teams have hired 138 – 138! – head coaches.

Do you agree that Wilfork is not his usual dominant self, and is leaning towards average with his play this year? Also, what do you think about the incredible amount of holding going on by offensive lines, during both the replacement ref and professional ref eras so far?

Oh boy, I’m glad someone wants to talk about Big Vince because I don’t think it’s gotten much mention anywhere else. Yes, it’s true that ProFootballFocus has graded Wilfork negatively the last five consecutive games, and he really hasn’t stood out much recently with a big play. But it’s also worth pointing out the Greg […]
