One thing the [Patriots] do so well is they evaluate themselves from a coaching standpoint and in evaluating players. But when I got there in 2011, one coach was here had worked there 10 years. Another had been there 12 years. Another guy learning to be an offensive line coach had been there for three or four years. The staff was such a tight-knit group and they worked together. It’s tough when you don’t have consistency in coaches. The philosophy and style changes. The play-calling changes. The scheme changes. It’s like starting over. That’s one of the toughest things from a team standpoint to go through. With the Patriots, you knew who we had and who they could trust and when you have that consistency it makes things so much easier.

Rob Ninkovich sets up plenty of sacks for teammates with a strong outside rush, so he need not apologize for getting his late fourth-quarter sack as a primary result of the work of veteran end Andre Carter. It was Carter’s strong inside rush on right guard Kraig Urbik that forced quarterback Thad Lewis to step up and allowed Ninkovich, whose motor never seems to stop, to get the clean-up sack.

ReFo: Patriots @ Dolphins, Week 15 | ProFootballFocus.com

The four sacks that the Patriots’ defense collected on the day give the appearance that their pass rush was dominant when in fact the pressures were lacking all day long. The defense managed just 14 total pressures on the day and managed to pressure Tannehill on just 11 of 41 dropbacks. Even then, of those 14 pressures, four came on blitzes from corners and linebackers. The defensive line was generally ineffective and had a cumulative pass rushing grade of -5.0. The main culprit for the Patriots was Rob Ninkovich (-1.8) whose only pressure came via running back Daniel Thomas. It will be interesting to see if the high snap counts for Ninkovich and Chandler Jones(-0.4) catch up with them down the stretch. Jones leads all 4-3 defensive ends in snaps with 1002 while Ninkovich is second at 971.

I think one of the biggest problems of this season, and one that hasn’t been that affected by injuries, is the lack of depth at defensive end. When you break down the pass rush problems, I think that’s a big factor, even if Ninkovich and Chandler are pretty much set for the next few seasons as the starting defensive ends.

Michael Buchanan got the early nod but was a scratch on Sunday. Jake Bequette has been MIA all season and it seems likely he’s nothing more than camp fodder next season.

This forced them to bring back Andre Carter who unfortunately is not the same guy he was in 2011. The Pats should look long and hard for a designated pass rusher in the mold of 2011 Mark Anderson this offseason.

“Young. The defense is a lot different compared to when I was here in 2011. We’re young,” Carter said. “It’s a talented group of guys, a real talented group of individuals. I’m sure they’re trying to find their niche, their place. Like any young team. But they’re just as talented as any other group. I think the most important thing is to remain consistent and understand how this game is played. “There’s a little learning curve, just like any young defense. They’re constantly developing. I’m sure where there are times in certain schemes where a younger guy may not understand where he fits. And that happens. I think the most important thing, like any other defense, is communication. You have to constantly communicate and make sure we’re all on the same page.”

In the Patriots’ 4-2-5 nickel and 4-1-6 dime packages, rookie Michael Buchanan has primarily been coming on as the right defensive end, kicking end Chandler Jones (the team’s best pass-rusher) to an interior rush position. Buchanan has lost containment in two of the last three games on third-down plays, which contributed to quarterback scrambles for first downs (Bengals’ Andy Dalton for 6 yards on third-and-5 and Jets’ Geno Smith for 14 yards on third-and-14). Carter’s presence could be tied, in part, to the Patriots looking for a more consistent player in that role.

Couple thoughts on the Fanene and Andre Carter

August 21, 2012 by Mike Dussault

Couple tidbits broke this morning, let’s start with Jonathan Fanene:

#Patriots have released DL Jonathan Fanene, OL Kyle Hill & K Chris Koepplin.

— New England Patriots (@Patriots) August 21, 2012

If you’re familiar with this blog you know that I’ve been banging the “Fanene’s gonna be a huge help with the interior rush” drum so this is definitely unfortunate news. Well, perhaps the unfortunate part is just that Fanene couldn’t get healthy.

The good news is that Ron Brace, Kyle Love, Brandon Deaderick and Jermaine Cunningham all look like they could provide a much-needed boost to the inside rush this year. However there’s no question that there’s still a need for Myron Pryor to get back on the field. At this point it’s starting to look more and more likely he’ll remain on the PUP list and sit out the first six weeks of the season. Almost hard to believe he hasn’t been able to play in nearly a year, guys come back faster than that from ACL tears.

Raiders RT @victafur: FA Andre Carter getting tires kicked on out here after practice

— Greg A. Bedard (@GregABedard) August 21, 2012

Ever since fans saw Chandler Jones play well against the Saints the calls to bring Andre Carter back have gone nearly silent, and now he’s meeting with the Raiders. For most of the off-season it just seemed like a foregone conclusion that the Pats would wait for Carter to get healthy then sign him. Despite some reports that the Pats and Carter couldn’t agree on a deal it still seemed like things would come together.

But once Jones flashed it seems like Carter became the forgotten man. Add in Trevor Scott and Jermaine Cunningham also showing up in practices and games and it made it seem even less likely that the Pats need Carter. There’s no question he was one of the MVPs of the defense last year and everyone loved what he brought to the team on and off the field. But it looks like the youth movement is in full swing and Chandler Jones needs to be on the field as much as possible.

Still, Carter was a lot of fun to root for even if it was just for that one season…

Andre Carter Highlights 2011 [HD] (by footballman175)

What a great reminder of how much of an impact Andre Carter had last year, and when you think about it, if not for injuries to him and Gronk the Super Bowl might’ve turned out a little different. Oh well. Like all Patriots fans we have our fingers crossed that he’s back with the Pats.

UPDATE after posting:

@PatsPropaganda wow!!!! I’m honored. Thank you.
