PatsPosits: Fonzie (Dennard) has jumped the roster

May 5, 2015 by Mike Dussault

The short and somewhat tumultuous Patriots career of Alfonzo Dennard came to an end today as the team released him. It’s somewhat of a surprise given Dennard had started his fair share of games as an outside corner in 2012 and 2013 and the Pats don’t really have any other proven outside starting corner on the roster, at least that has experience in the system.

Dennard’s first two years were marred with legal trouble but even though those were cleared up this season he ended up buried on the depth chart and unable to transition to the slot, a place he might picked up some more playing time.

It seems impossible to know where the line between performance, attitude and injuries was for Dennard, but some details are now coming to light.

Reportedly Dennard didn’t always have the commitment necessary in Foxboro, so it would seem the writing was on the wall for a while now. With multiple rookie free agents being signed, cutting Dennard not only opened up a roster spot but also freed up nearly $1 million in cap space.

Not much changes as far as the cornerbacks go, it’s going to be an open competition and the best three guys will win the starting roles out of camp. While Dennard had some good man coverage abilities and was a feisty corner, he was undersized and useless in the 2013 AFC Championship when forced to cover Demaryius Thomas.

Dennard is not expected to play Sunday against the Broncos, and it might be even longer than that, according to a source. The timing of the injury is difficult, as the Broncos rank first in points, total yards, passing yards and passing touchdowns.

Dennard seems to be improving, too. He wasn’t targeted against the Bengals, and he allowed just two receptions against the Saints. He’s a feisty cornerback who will have to take over the No. 1 spot if Talib has to miss time due to his injured hip. Dennard isn’t quite on Talib’s level, but he proved he can more than hold his own when he was matched up against Julio Jones and Roddy White against Atlanta and Marques Colston against the Saints.
I’ll say this about Dennard: Whoever is matched up against him will be very annoyed. Dennard is very handsy.

[T]he Patriots do not plan on cutting Dennard, a league source told the Globe. The team is, however, prepared for Dennard to be suspended by the NFL under the player conduct policy. As a reference point, Lions cornerback Aaron Berry was suspended for three games in 2012 after getting arrested twice in the offseason. An NFL spokesman said only that Dennard’s case is “under review.”

The Patriots don’t blitz much, if at all, and don’t get to quarterback Mark Sanchez with the standard rush, which primarily consisted of Chandler Jones, Vince Wilfork, Kyle Love and Rob Ninkovich-or-Jermaine Cunningham. The rush does deliver when it counts on the final play of overtime, but Sanchez still had success with all that time […]
