Dueling Breer-Gasper “Patriots/Belichick All In!” Articles

August 11, 2011 by Mike Dussault

In case you were wondering Bill Belichick is finally going to stop messing around and actually try to win a Super Bowl this year. At least that’s what Chris Gasper and Albert Breer are saying.

Of course either of these articles could’ve been written in 2004 or 2007. Just scratch out “Haynesworth” for “Dillon” and “Ochocinco” for “Moss”. These are just the kind of paint-by-numbers articles that annoy the sleeves off me.

Things like:

This could be the Patriots’ last shot to win with this current core group, and Belichick knows it. It’s a smart play. (Gasper)

Current core group? You mean Koppen, Light, Welker and Branch? Okay, that’s a core I guess, even though Light will only leave if they think Solder is ready, and they have plenty of cap room to re-sign Welker, Branch and Koppen if they want to. So wait, what is Gasper talking about? The real core on this team is about to be the young defense that is loaded with talent. The old core was gone in 2009.

The acquisitions of Albert Haynesworth and Chad Ochocinco represent more than a potential low-risk/high-reward investments for New England. They also signal that a) Belichick now feels comfortable with his team’s rocky recovery from losing the championship leadership of players like Mike Vrabel, Tedy Bruschi, Rodney Harrison and Richard Seymour, and b) he believes this new group of Patriots is ready to make a run at a championship. For the Patriots, it’s time. (Breer)

Last year’s 14-2 team was not ready to make a run at a championship? Okay. Granted they had a bad playoff team, but come on, they beat every team that played in the conference championship games* (no Aaron Rodgers I know but still).

And it’s not the locker room that needs to handle Chad and Albert. BB has already made it abundantly clear: fall in line or I’ll cut your ass no matter who you are. You don’t need a strong locker room to remind people of that. All you need is a cut off hoodie.

Part of the reason I write this blog are articles with perspectives like this. When will people understand that BB is “all in” every year, even if he doesn’t go out and sign a bunch of name free agents?

It’s the same thing every year. Sign Adalius Thomas, Randy Moss and Wes Welker and he wants to win a Super Bowl. Only sign Alge Crumpler and Gerard Warren and he’s throwing in the towel on that season.

Acquiring Haynesworth and Ochocinco is nothing outside of the norm. They are low risk, high reward players who may or may not pan out. They also both filled huge needs. I don’t care what year it is or what the locker room chemistry is like, if BB sees a potential steal who can fill a need he’ll give them a shot.

We all remember the the ones who worked out, but there have been plenty who haven’t. Jonthan Sullivan, John Lynch, Fred Taylor just to name a few. Just because this year’s guys come with some past attitude issues doesn’t suddenly make this year any more special than last year.

The Patriots are set up to win for a long time. Every off-season they do what they think is best for the team to improve, and as much as every lazy writer out there wants to take the angle of “trying to get Tom Brady one last ring”, the truth is that the Patriots are thinking about getting rings no matter who is at quarterback.

I’ve been around some really good teams, like that year [2008] we were 10-0 in Tennessee. But this is another 20 percent above that in terms of what everybody expects. We had a great coach in [former Titans coach] Jeff Fisher, but Belichick is beyond even that. He doesn’t let anything slip through the cracks. Not one little thing. It all has to be right.

More from new Patriot Albert Haynesworth

I’ve kind of been holding tempered expectations for Albert Haynesworth, just holding my breath before he gets cut or injured. Because if I did allow my expectations to rise I’d do nothing but write posts all day about how dominant him and Wilfork will be at the heart of this defense.

Needless to say everything that came out of Haynesworth’s mouth today is automatically raising my expectations. He just might be on the field week one after all. Here’s a sampling but I suggest you click and read the whole thing…

On playing a 3-4 defense and possibly two-gapping. “I’m willing the attack the quarterback, kill the running back, and knock everything back. … I don’t care what it is. Whatever gap the ball is in, that’s the gap I want to be in.”

Haynesworth dominates in Patriots debut

July 31, 2011 by Mike Dussault

I wasn’t at the Patriots Day Four of Training Camp but it was Albert Haynesworth’s debut and the reports were glowing across the board. I’ve sampled all of them below and though the sample size is small it’s shaping up how we kind of thought it would. With Wilfork and Haynesworth at the heart of the defense playing next to each other.

There’s still much to unfold with Haynesworth, but it seems like the Pats are doing the right thing by bringing him along slowly.

Chris Price: It was a pretty eventful practice, and a few of the highlights were provided by newcomer Albert Haynesworth. The massive defensive lineman, who drew loud and sustained applause when he strolled on the field at the start of his first padded practice (applause he acknowledged with a wave), hammered the offensive linemen who were opposite him — namely Rich Ohrnberger and Ryan Wendell — in a series of drills. The season is still in its embryonic stages, but it was undeniable that when he was out there, the big fella certainly made an impact. (When he wasn’t on the field, he was close to d-line coach Pepper Johnson.)

Ian Rapoport: On the first full-team drill, Haynesworth’s swim move put him in the backfield quick. It was quite a show. Still, he didn’t participate in that many plays, sitting out most of the second half of practice. And he didn’t run sprints. Perhaps he is being eased in.

Mike Reiss: During the first 11-on-11 work of the session, Haynesworth lined up along Vince Wilfork on the inside of a four-man line and wowed the capacity crowd by mauling through guard Rich Ohrnberger and center Ryan Wendell to crash the backfield. His presence was felt. However, Haynesworth had little if any participation in the remaining drills of practice, and was seen doing stretching work with the team’s training staff instead of running end-of-practice sprints. While clearly a dominating force when in action, Haynesworth’s health is something that bears watching.

Monique Walker: Haynesworth participated in a handful of drills, one of which included shoving offensive lineman Rich Ohrnberger backward on his first attempt. He showed a couple of impressive moves and then watched most of the rest of practice. He did not run sprints at the end of practice, choosing to join a few other players on the sidelines who were stretching. He did shadow Patriots defensive line coach Pepper Johnson and kept a watchful eye over many drills. It seems the Patriots are slowly easing him into the fold.

By every account of practice today Brandon Spikes was a stand out. Mike Reiss spoke with Spikes and it sounds like he’s got his head right and put the work in. Between him and Haynesworth the Patriots are going to have two intimidating presences on defense.

The defense dominated today, which as James Christensen of NEPatriotsDraft pointed out, is actually pretty common. It’s easy to destroy something that relies so much on timing and execution at the start.

Still, it’s nice to know the D is destroying anything after how their pass defense looked last year.
