3 GIFs that Defined Patriots Win Over Lions

November 24, 2014 by Mike Dussault

As you might expect after a 5-of-17 third down defensive performance, we’re going a little heavy on defense in this weeks GIFs That Defined The Game.

Can’t forget Amendola’s kickoff return or Ryan Allen’s punt either, both were tone setters in the first half, but the return was just too long to GIF and as appreciative as I am of Allen’s boomer, no one wants to see a punt on loop. So good job, guys, but here are the plays that defined the game otherwise.

First, we start early in the second quarter, with New England holding a four-point lead and Detroit sitting on the two yard line on third down. Patrick Chung has had problems with big tight ends in the past, and they’re certainly not his ideal matchup, but here Chung is agile and physical enough to avoid the traffic and get into perfect position to defend Stafford’s attempt to throw it up to Fauria.

This was the only time all game the Lions would get into the red zone and the Pats held. This is the kind of play that great defenses make. Holding opponents to field goals in the red zone will be very necessary in January/February.

Next, we’re still in the second quarter, with New England up by eight as Detroit is on the outskirts of field goal range facing a manageable third-and-four. Revis and Arrington play the attempted pick play perfectly, while the four-man rush gets just enough pressure to force a backfooted throw by Stafford. Great team defense to force the punt and keep points off the board.

We’re still in the second quarter when we get these next two plays to Rob Gronkowski to take the Pats from their own 42 to field goal range after being in a 2nd-and-17 hole. Gronk is so hard to stop, with these two plays coming after a relatively quiet first half.

These catches show the quick-scoring ability and explosiveness of the Patriots’ offense right now. No down-and-distance is unmanageable. Putting points on the board before the half were some of the final nails in the Lions’ coffin.

Finally, comes a third down on the Lions’ first possession of the second half. A touchdown drive here might swing the momentum and made things interesting.

The pass is completed, but it’s the way the defense closes on the ball to keep the Lions short of the first down that most stands out here. This is the kind of swarming defense that the Patriots have been showing lately.

This play essentially snuffed out any hope the Lions might’ve had coming out of the locker room as the Pats would tack on another field goal on their ensuing possession.

3 GIFs that Defined Patriots Win Over Colts

November 17, 2014 by Mike Dussault

Lots of great plays to choose from this week, but here are three that summed up the game most succinctly in my view.

We start off with a carry on third-and-1 in the first quarter that Jonas Gray took for 20 yards. The Pats had struggled in recent weeks when running ball on short yardage third downs. Against Denver and Chicago they were 0-for-3 in those situations.

But this play illustrates the kind of night it was going to be: Gray running roughshod over the Colts and the Pats converting 9-of-13 third downs.

photo ind 1_zpsz20bxae9.gif

Next, we skip to the fourth quarter, with the Pats up by eight, still anyone’s game. Brady finds Brandon LaFell, who makes a ridiculous catch to take the Pats into scoring range to put the game away. LaFell has been the player the Patriots have lacked since Randy Moss. Not to say LaFell is Moss-esque, but he’s the first physical mismatch at receiver the Pats have had since him. Add in circus catches like this and it’s easy to see why Brady has finally found a free agent wide receiver he likes for the first time since 2007.

photo ind 2_zpsxmtlkflz.gif

I could’ve chosen quite a few third-down stops, or even the McCourty interception, but instead we’re going with this game-sealing fourth-down stop. Reggie Wayne has put some final fourth-quarter daggers in our backs plenty of times over the last decade, but this time Darrelle Revis sticks with him like glue and forces the incompletion.

This Patriots defense is finally no longer the weak link, as it has been since 2010. Now they’re every bit the strength the offense is.

And of course, I couldn’t not put this play by Gronk up. Just the ultimate exclamation point.

3 GIFs That Defined Patriots Win Over Broncos

November 4, 2014 by Mike Dussault

A lot of hard choices were made this week when choosing the three GIFs that defined this big win. What about Edelman’s punt return for TD? What about Gronk’s ridiculous catch? What about Ayer’s third down sack?

All of those were impressive plays, and while I think Edelman’s punt return should certainly be in there, I felt these three really were the ones that cemented the game in the Patriots’ favor.

First, we have Ninkovich’s interception which has been broken down all over the internet the last two days. When you look back at the classic Manning vs. Patriots defense games, this interception fits right in. This pick was one of those instant messages that the Patriots were fooling Manning, at least early on, with their coverage schemes. They’d take the lead for good four plays later on a touchdown pass to Edelman.

 photo den 1_zpsmd9rs9tb.gif

There’s nothing like extending a lead from 13 points to 20 points just before halftime. Of course, you always need touchdowns vs. Manning, but to pull out a touchdown on third down in the final seconds of the half, was a huge boost to a team that was already rolling. Of course it helps when three defenders follow Gronk, leaving Vereen wide open.

 photo den 2_zps7ezcfth1.gif

If the Broncos get a touchdown here on their second drive of the second half, things would’ve gotten interesting in a hurry. On their first possession they drive right through the Pats on a six-play, 57-yard touchdown drive. Instead McCourty delivers a knockout blow to Welker’s back and Browner was there to grab the ball as Welker coughed it up. The Pats would score a touchdown on the next play and the blowout was on.

Three GIFs That Defined Patriots Win over Bears

October 27, 2014 by Mike Dussault

Sometimes, like last week’s game against the Jets, the key plays come right at the very end of the game. Often is the case in divisional games.

But this week the game was defined in the first couple possessions, with the Pats coming out on fire on both sides of the ball, dictating to the Bears what kind of game this was going to be.

This is exactly what New England needed to do. It was one of my points of emphasis before the game, and even Brandon Browner said it was something the team talked about this week.

Here are the three plays that immediately defined the game.

First, we have the Pats facing a third-and-18 on the Bears first possession. Granted, there were some solid plays prior to this one, but third down has been the big problem for the Pats this year so getting off the field in this spot was a huge win.

The key to it is Dominique Easley, starting in place of Chandler Jones. Instead of just blindly rushing up field, Easley has the awareness to see Matt Forte trying to slip out to catch a screen pass. Easley is having none of that and blows the whole play up. Great start for the rookie and the defense.

photo bears 1_zpsboeo76cr.gif

Next up we have the first two plays from scrimmage that the Pats ran. First comes a play that essentially told the Bears what they were in for – a whole lot of Brandon LaFell racking up YAC. Then comes a 19-yard run by Jonas Grey that put the Pats inside the red zone. Starting a game off with a big gain in the passing game, then one in the running game is hard to top. Two plays into the game and Bears are already on their heels, exactly as we hoped.

photo bears 2b_zps87157sli.gif photo bears 2_zps7jhrpmit.gif

Finally comes a third down stop on the Bears second possession. These are the stops the Pats have not been getting early in the year. They’d be in position to make this play, but would miss the tackle and allow the drive to keep going. Brandon Browner made a handful of plays that made a difference yesterday. If he can continue to make them on third down, we’ll finally see the kind of elite defense we expect.

3 GIFs That Defined Patriots Win Over Jets

October 20, 2014 by Mike Dussault

In a tight divisional game like this was, the plays at the end of the game are usually the ones that define it most. My choices this week are no exception. There was the Pats first touchdown pass that caught the Jets asleep and there were a few sacks, notably by Chandler Jones, that I could’ve gone with, but these three plays were the ones that gave the Patriots the win.

This first play was the feel-good moment of the game for those who had been waiting for Danny Amendola to show up in the passing game. Just an incredibly acrobatic catch from Amendola as it appeared that his kickoff returns got him into the game flow early in this one. Hard not to feel great for Amendola as he came through in the clutch like this. If he can continue to develop into a threat, the Pats offense will have another difficult dimension for opponents to defend.

photo jets 2_zpsx31ifygu.gif

And as if the game-winning touchdown wasn’t enough, Amendola recovered this scary onsides kick on the very next play. It had to have been a frustrating start to the 2014 season for Amendola, but these two huge plays show why you just have to keep battling.

photo jets 1_zpsuvpwy5pk.gif

Finally, comes the game-saving blocked field goal attempt. Such poetic justice after how last year’s overtime game ended with Jones getting called for a silly penalty that handed the Jets the win. I think there was a pretty good chance this one was going to be good too. Again, this should help spark Chris Jones in what has already been a solid start to his second season after coming back from injury.

3 GIFs That Defined Patriots Win Over Bills

October 13, 2014 by Mike Dussault

There were a lot of great plays to pick from this week, a nice problem I’m not used to having this season, so I just went ahead and picked five because I make the rules here on the Prop.

Players stepped up despite major injuries and made plays at the critical moments to get the Pats the victory. Despite the final score this was a closely-fought football game with the game on the line well into the fourth quarter. The Pats showed a ton of grit and their trademark cold-bloodedness that we’ve come to expect.

Here are the five plays that stood out the most to me…

photo Buf1_zpsd1d2e548.gif

After going back-and-forth for much of the first half, each scoring touchdowns, this play really got the Pats kick started for the rest of the game. Chandler Jones continued his great season and showed remarkable athleticism to corral the ball. The Pats would get six points just before the half and set them up for the opening drive of the third quarter.

photo Buf2_zps7903fc48.gif

What a play this long touchdown pass was to Brian Tyms for a bunch of reasons. First, it came on the opening drive of the third quarter, a spot the Pats often struggle on the road, and for all the talk that Tom Brady had no more deep accuracy, this one play showed there just might be some hope. This play should serve as a message to any teams who want to load the box and short zones.

photo Buf3_zps7027ab87.gif

The Bills had just put together a touchdown-scoring drive and closed to within six points but the Pats came right back out firing with this play immediately moving them across midfield. Not only is this just one of many examples that I could’ve chosen to illustrate that Gronk is back, but it also shows the kind of steely resolve the Pats had as the Bills continued to stick around.

photo Buf4_zps24b1874a.gif

With a nine-point lead this was the play that effectively put the game away, and the fact that it came on third-and-12 and Brady found Brandon LaFell is just the icing on the cake. This game also proves that the Patriots are a lot more than just the Edelman and Gronk show. The offense didn’t show this kind of development last year until much later. LaFell is developing into the big receiving threat the Pats have lacked for what seems like an eternity.

photo Buf5_zps031e1f23.gif

Still the Bills kept fighting but this was the final dagger, converting a third-and-long and not giving them the ball back with plenty of time and just an eight-point lead. Brady stands strong in a tight pocket and delivers a strike to Gronk.

If the Pats can maintain this kind of execution, they will be very hard to stop.

Three GIFs That Defined Patriots Win Over Bengals

October 6, 2014 by Mike Dussault

It was a lot more enjoyable this week finding three plays to GIF that defined the victory over the Bengals. Of course I could’ve just chosen horrible penalty calls but we’ll stick with plays the Patriots actually made.

 photo Cin1_zpsddc527a5.gif

We start with the first play of the game, a 20-yard play action completion to Brandon LaFell. For all the criticism the Pats took last week for trying to pass right out of the gate, this play set the tone for the entire game and gave the Pats their first non-three-and-out first possession this season.

 photo CIN2_zps6653341a.gif

There were quite a few defensive plays to choose from, especially on third down where the Bengals didn’t convert one all day. Here is a key third down stop on the Bengals first possession of the second half. A touchdown drive here might’ve made a game out of it, but the Pats went aggressive with press man and no one could get open. Just watch Arrington attack the receiver at the top of the screen. That disrupts the whole timing of the play. Beautiful work on defense.

 photo Cin3_zpsa799292d.gif

Finally we go with the Gronk’s 17-yard touchdown catch where he looke like the Gronk of old, even as the safety dove at his knees, Gronk didn’t even flinch. Each week Gronk is getting closer to his old self and this play is a reminder what a weapon he is.

I think the Ravens certainly showed how physically and mentally tough they were to go out there and come from behind and beat Denver in a tough environment. That showed a lot of character, resiliency and toughness. Our game with them this year, our game with them last year, went down to the last possession, […]
