15draft

May 2, 2015 by Mike Dussault

Richards is a team leader and warrior on the field. Very coachable prospect that loves the game and plays with a passion. He is very tough and extremely competitive. Very effective against the run, but plays ball very well. He shows up in all facets of the game. Overall he looks pretty fluid and athletic. He has good agility and gets his hands on a lot of passes (21 PBUs over his career) but must do a better job of fighting through blocks and making reliable tackles in the open field to overcome his lack of ideal size.

PatsPosits: I heart defensive linemen picks

May 1, 2015 by Mike Dussault

As anyone who’s read this blog for a while now knows, I am always down to take a defensive tackle in the first round so I was excited when Malcom Brown was the pick.

In my mock I had them taking Eddie Goldman. Really it was almost a coin flip for me between Brown and Goldman, and the reason I went to Goldman instead was he was a little bigger and (I thought) a little more likely to still be around at 32.

So this is doubly good. Why? Because Brown was a lot better than the 32nd best player in this draft and the Pats added another player who can disrupt things up front.

Since 2010 I’ve almost worn out the interior pass rush drum from beating it so much. In today’s NFL, with so many good quarterbacks, you simply must have defensive tackles who can cause problems immediately off the snap and either get in the QB’s face or push one of his offensive linemen back into his lap.

Now the Pats have Easley, Chris Jones and Brown who can all get off the ball. However, Brown’s greater size makes him an even more useful tool because he should be a good run deterrent on passing downs as well. That was a big role of Wilfork’s and while Siliga should see snaps there as well, Brown’s all around game should help him make some pass rush impact.

He won’t have to instantly play 80 percent of the snaps like Wilfork was doing, but I’d bet his playing time just keeps increasing as the season goes along.

Who’s Next?

As I’ve been saying here, this next pick looks like prime guard territory, and with the Jets adding Leonard Williams the need for a big mauling guard upfront has never been bigger.

AJ Cann and Tre Jackson are two names at the top of my list. Pats might have to trade up for Cann, which I think is reasonable. Otherwise a surprise cornerback could make sense as well.

With three picks today (one of which cannot be traded) they have the ammo to move up if they choose to.

He’s such a mature young fella. Nothing really fazes him,” cornerback Quandre Diggs said. “He has something he’s competing for and that makes him work harder. He wants to succeed for his family.

Bottom Line:
Penetrating big man who took a huge step forward as an NFL prospect in 2014. Brown has hand quickness and uses hands like an NFL starter. His instincts and feel off the snap help him to get into the backfield quickly. Some personnel men believe Brown can play multiple spots along the line in a 4-3 or 3-4 defense, which could put him in play for a high number of teams.

Patriots Mock Draft: WR Jaelen Strong Adds Size to Patriots Pass-Catching Group

Patriots Mock Draft: WR Jaelen Strong Adds Size to Patriots Pass-Catching Group

Interesting, outside the box mock from Frenz. Of all the positions of need this week, I’m most interested to see how running back and wide receiver play out. Seems like the general opinions are across the board as to where need and fit could meet with those two spots.

What the Patriots should do, rounds 1-3

April 27, 2015 by Mike Dussault

What the Patriots should do, rounds 1-3

Like the first two picks of this mock from Tom E. Curran, not a big fan of the second two. I wouldn’t be surprised if Byron Jones is the only first round cornerback on the Patriots draft board, because no one else checks every single box like he does.

I’d love to nab Cann with the 64th pick, though I worry if he drops that far. Otherwise I think Jackson from FSU might work there. Either way a lot of us see that 64th spot as a guard re(guard)less.

Grissom feels really high for this spot and I see a little too much redundancy to Ninkovich and Sheard as he’d likely be a strong side defensive end with some linebacker versatility in the Pats system.

WR is one of the great question marks in this draft. Count me on the side of not seeing it as a huge Day ½ need, hence I think Lockett isn’t a necessary pick. We all get wowed with big play wide receivers but I continue to believe Belichick prefers guys like LaFell who have an all-around game and can play to Brady’s strengths rather than a bells-and-whistles guy that would get us all excited on paper but probably struggle to find a legitimate role.

Barring a late change, look for running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis to make it to the open market on March 13, with the possibility of his return to New England remaining open. It appears the Patriots have set a value on Green-Ellis, and it’s not at a level that has Green-Ellis ready to sign before seeing […]
