Revis’ Absence Quickly Becoming Ravens, Patriots & Dolphins Advantage

August 25, 2010 by Mike Dussault

For the last three weeks I’ve never really thought that Darrelle Revis would sit out the entire season, and I still believe that. One way or another things will get done. The Jets are too dumb not to overpay a player that they’re own coach hypes more than anyone.

Numbers like a 10-year deal worth $150 million with $65 million guaranteed have been thrown out there. Ridiculous, right? With that kind of payday Revis better not give up a touchdown until 2020.

I’ve long predicted tonight’s episode number three of Hard Knocks would be the triumphant return of Revis. That’s looking less likely now, which means that with a mere 18 days until the season opens time is quickly running out on Revis’ chance to get quality time to get ready for the season.

Like the Patriots, the Jets play three of their first four games in the division, and the Ravens, Patriots and Dolphins all boast elite receiving corps, so Revis will be thrown immediately into the fire assuming he does return by the opener. I don’t dispute Revis was an excellent cornerback in 2009, but can he pick up where he left off with just one meaningless preseason game to get ready? I’m not so sure.

What I am sure of, as a Patriots fan, is that Randy Moss looks like he’s ready to have a monstrous season. He hasn’t missed a practice and his chemistry with Tom Brady is better than ever.

Revis will be set to face Anquan Boldin in 19 days and counting. Followed by Randy Moss and Brandon Marshall. If he can return between now and then, and shut down those three receivers maybe he just might be worth $150 million. But probably not.
