The Patriots have allowed three offensive touchdowns through the first eight quarters of play, and an average of 15.5 points per game. With the understanding that they’ve already played their second game of the season while just about everyone else is waiting to complete Week 2, their average points per game allowed is seventh in the NFL. (By way of comparison, New England yielded an average of 20.7 points per game last year, tied for ninth in the league.

Good for once to see the defense go out and finish a ball game,” defensive tackle Vince Wilfork said after the Patriots finished off an ugly 13-10 win over the Jets at Gillette Stadium. “Two weeks in a row we came up big, and it’s good for the defense.

Said going in last night that this one was all about the defense stepping up and that’s what happened. Yeah, Geno threw some awful picks, but regardless, 10 points allowed in a divisional game to a rookie QB is acceptable. Was it perfect? No. But despite all the criticism that will be dumped all over this team the next ten days, there’s a lot to like about the defense through the first two games.

what can you tell us about the routes that thompkins and dobson have been running? are they being eased into the playbook or are they being expected to hit the ground running? seems like they are being put in situations where they have to make tough catches.

I think we’re seeing Thompkins run a lot of the tree that Lloyd did last year. Not that I think they can, will or should bring Lloyd back, but we saw him make those tough back hip catches on the outside with tight man coverage last year. Thompkins hasn’t been able to make those.

But we have seen a little more attempt to send those two deep as well, that’s a good sign. Really, if they just hang on to the ball a couple times last night things would’ve started to look a little different.

Look, despite what everyone’s impression of the Bills and Jets are, these are two teams that have traditionally played the Pats pretty tight and both have good front sevens. They’re also in the division so they know how they have to play the Pats.

So it hasn’t been an easy start by any stretch of the imagination, nor will it get much easier until they start making at least the catches that hit them in the hands. It takes time. I’m being patient.

I think it is good that the offense isn’t spectacular for once because it gives the team the opportunity that it hasn’t really had in a long time: holding on to leads, winning with defense, game winning drives/ running down the clock. I think this is great for the team until the offense gets its groove back, what do u think

I agree. Look, I think we all learned in 2007 that the season is a process. It’s about finding who you are as a team, facing adversity, coming together, and then being unstoppable right at the end.

There is plenty to be critical about, but let’s not forget we were 1-2 last year, lost to the Cardinals with Welker and Gronk, and this group of young players on both sides of the ball are just at the start of their careers.
