Patriots defense playing well, but next three games will provide challenge – Ben Volin – The Boston Globe

Patriots defense playing well, but next three games will provide challenge – Ben Volin – The Boston Globe

Ah yes, the old “they haven’t beaten anybody yet” argument. Look, I’m not going to say they’ve faced a great QB yet, but how many great QBs are there really in the NFL? 5-10 tops?

And let’s look back at the QBs who have put up over 300 yards passing in the last three seasons:

  • Chad Henne (x 3)
  • Carson Palmer
  • Vince Young
  • Ryan Fitzpatrick (x 3)
  • Jason Campbell
  • Dan Orlovsky
  • Tony Romo

So I think the big takeaway is that by just shutting two rookie QBs and an about-to-be-benched one, and doing what they’re supposed to do, that qualifies as progress.

Tedy Bruschi’s Breakdown — Falcons dangerous, yet vulnerable – ESPN Boston

Tedy Bruschi’s Breakdown — Falcons dangerous, yet vulnerable – ESPN Boston

I’m envisioning Patriots linebacker Dont’a Hightower as a key player with Gonzalez in mind. He’s shown the ability to reroute tight ends at the line of scrimmage with a powerful jam. Gonzalez’s consistency is remarkable; he has caught at least one pass in 198 consecutive games. Here’s another stat that caught my attention: The Falcons attempted 30 rushes last week against the Dolphins (146 yards) and, in their first two games combined – a loss to the Saints and a win over the Rams – they had 30 rushing attempts. So, from a pure numbers standpoint, there was a renewed commitment to run and balance things out in Week 3.

Which offense will give the patriots defense more problems and which defense will give the patriots offense the most problems: the falcons, the saints and the bengals

September 26, 2013 by Mike Dussault

Bengals on defense given their Giants model of being able to get pressure with four, and Saints on offense just because of Brees.

Falcons could give them problems with their offense as well given their big, athletic wide receivers, but I fear the Saints more. Probably because of what they did to us in 2009. Even though our defense forgot to show up at that game.

Is there a specific way you think J-Mc and BB will try and attack the Falcons offensively and defensively?

September 26, 2013 by Mike Dussault

Let’s start on defense because that’s my thing. I have two big concerns, first is letting Julio Jones and Roddy White get deep. As we’ve talked about a lot, no one has been worse the last three seasons in defending the 20+ passes than the Pats. They’ve been pretty good so far this season, but this will be their biggest test to date.

Of course pressure plays into that and thus getting Matt Ryan off the spot with their interior rush is a must. This is another area of weaknesses I’ve written on a lot.

The other big concern for me are dumpoff passes, especially when we have Spikes on Jacquizz Rogers or even Jason Snelling.

So defensively my biggest key is Chandler Jones and his interior rush on passing downs, and Tommy Kelly/Vince Wilfork and blitzing linebackers on base downs.

Offensively, it depends on whether or not Gronk is in the fold. He’d be a huge help this week, but let’s assume he’s out. There really isn’t a lot the Patriots can do creatively given their limited personnel at this point. It really comes down to just executing with the players they have.

But I do think the Falcons can be had in the passing game, especially with the 2nd and 3rd wide receivers. So I’d look for Thompkins and Dobson to once again be a big part of the game plan.

As I wrote last night, they need to be better on first down, especially on the ground. If they’re doing that, the offense should get just the kickstart it needs.

Again, more than specific game planning stuff, this is the kind of game the Pats will have to bring their “A” game and be mentally tough enough win in a tough dome environment. Should be a good experience for the team regardless and pay dividends down the road, even if they lose.

Do you think that this new hybrid defense we are seeing could become a new type of base defense set that other teams could try and emulate? If so, what should it be called? A “2-5” maybe? Or maybe the “75 defense” after Big Vince like when Buddy Ryan named the 46 after Doug Plank?

Oh I love this question! As I’ve written about a little bit I’ve been calling this defense the “Double Nose”, because it’s really like having two nose tackles from the old 3-4 in the middle, often two gapping, while trying to free up five other linebacker types to make plays. So in some ways you […]
