Combination of speed, quickness and anticipation has helped Julian Edelman become one of the NFL’s best punt returners | masslive.com

Combination of speed, quickness and anticipation has helped Julian Edelman become one of the NFL’s best punt returners | masslive.com

Good read from Nick Underhill about the somewhat underappreciated punt return efforts of Edelman.

Edelman has used this formula to great success throughout his career and has emerged as one of the sports preeminent punt returners. With 21 yards for 243 yards this season (11.6 per return), the wide receiver has a career average of 12.8 yards per return, which ties him for the NFL’s all-time mark with Jake Christiansen and George McAfee. Edelman’s current average ranks fifth in the NFL among players with 10 or more punt returns, though he and Seattle’s Golden Tate are the only players on that list that have not returned a punt for a touchdown. After taking one back in each of the last three seasons, it seems to be a matter of time before Edelman uses his speed, quickness and smarts to take one back.

The angle that we hit each other, if I would have gone out of bounds, I would have had to lose yards or go sideways, and I’m not really interested in that … you’re cutting the corner and trying to get as many yards as you can, and really not worried about much else – you’re worried about protecting the ball and flying through there as fast as you can go,” he said. “It’s kind of one of those deals and he kind of just hit me on the button. But I feel fine.

Any time a perceived elite team falters, analysis pops up with “blueprints” on how future opponents can duplicate that success. Perhaps the best example was at the end of 2007 when the New York Giants defeated the 18-0 Patriots in the Super Bowl and everyone explained the Giants’ blueprint for success: “All you have to do is create pressure with your front four and get in quarterback Tom Brady’s face and get physical with their wide receivers and you can shut down their offense.” Oh. That sounds easy. All teams need to do is employ four elite pass rushers capable of creating pressure without a blitz while the back-7 covers one of the best wide receiving groups in the history. Easy enough.

A little Patriots negativity to get the blood boiling

Patriots fans might as well write this off as another AFC East title-winning, playoff disappointment season now according to most of the chatter across the internet today. We’ve got resident parade poo pooer Bert Breer on Gresh and Zo saying he “just doesn’t see it with this defense” and CSNNE’s Mike Giardi playing the playmaker […]
