2013 Midseason All-Division Team: AFC East | ProFootballFocus.com

2013 Midseason All-Division Team: AFC East | ProFootballFocus.com

Not as many Pats on here as we’re used to, but one surprise is Jamie Collins making it as a special teamer. He had a tough outing against the Dolphins and saw his snaps reduced on defense against the Steelers, but as PFF sees it, his contributions on special teams have been superb.

Patriots Take 2: Aggressive offensive game plan to attack aggressive Steelers defense – Going Deep – Boston.com

Good breakdown from Frenz, with his usual great screen shots and GIFs, like this key third down where Brady went to Dobson.

This was probably Hightower’s best game of the season. He seemed to be everywhere in run defense and was strong in coverage, giving up three receptions on nine targets.

What do slot receivers generally do, how is their job different from the other receivers

November 6, 2013 by Mike Dussault

Really it comes down to the number of routes that they can run because they’re in the middle of the field. Whenever a defensive back is making his presnap reads, he can immediately make an educated guess of what routes the receiver will run. When dealing with an outside receiver that read is a lot easier, and the defender also has the sideline to use to his advantage.

But in the middle of the field, there is no sideline to work with and the number of potential routes is a lot higher.

In the Patriots offense, the slot receiver is the chains mover. We saw it with Troy Brown, we saw it with Welker, and we’re seeing it now with Edelman and Amendola. Not to take anything away from any of those players, but if you’re playing that position, you’re going to get a lot of balls thrown your way. The design of the offense just makes it that way.

Now each receiver has their own strengths that the play design can be tweaked to enhance, but ultimately their job is to read the defense, know where the holes in the coverage will be and often be the “hot” receiver should the defense blitz. They need quickness, sure hands, and have to be fearless going over the middle.

From what you have seen so far, are the patriots using amendola the same way they used welker or is he doing the same but a little bit different

November 6, 2013 by Mike Dussault

Well, it’s a somewhat limited sample size and clearly Amendola is not 100 percent yet, but overall there have been a lot of similarities. But I also think we’ve seen a little more attacking downfield with Amendola. We saw that in the preseason and we saw it last weekend vs. the Steelers.

There’s no question that Welker’s ability to get open immediately after the snap is unequaled. Edelman has some of the same agility but Welker was special at it.

FOOTBALL OUTSIDERS | DVOA PLAYOFF ODDS REPORT

FOOTBALL OUTSIDERS | DVOA PLAYOFF ODDS REPORT

Pats have a 94% chance at making the playoffs, but the breakdown on the seeds has them most likely to end up the 4 seed, followed by the 3 seed, the 2 seed, the 6 seed, the 1 seed and basically no chance at the 5 seed.

Patriots defensive improvement hinges at one position

Mike Wright was one of the unsung heros of the Patriots defense from 2008 through a good part of 2010 until his concussion problems started. His numbers from that time frame won’t jump off the page at you until 2010, when he put up an impressive 10.7 pass rush rating (via ProFootballFocus.com) through the first […]
