No team has more sacks in the past five games than the Patriots, both in raw tally (18) and ratio (one sack every 9.39 pass plays, well above the league average of one every 14.86 pass plays). It must be noted that their four opponents in that span – the Jets, Dolphins, Steelers and Panthers – are all among the league’s most sack-prone teams; they are four of the seven clubs to allow a sack more often than once every 12 pass plays. But Broncos Offensive Coordinator Adam Gase sees the Patriots’ recent pass-rushing form as a testament to their strengths, rather than their foes’ weaknesses.
“It’s probably more what they’re doing defensively. Their edge rushers don’t get the (publicity) a lot that these other guys get but they do a great job,“ said Gase.

If an impact DE was available in the draft or free agency do you think the patriots would take that person and move nikovich to LB

November 22, 2013 by Mike Dussault

Nah, I think they’re pretty set with Ninkovich and Jones as their edge players, whether they’re playing OLB or DE, which is really just semantics. They could use some depth though at DE, curious to see if Buchanan works his way back into some pass rushing chances.

Were you surprised by the game plan the Pats implemented on Monday? There wasn’t much hurry up and a lot more runnin early on than I thought there would be

November 22, 2013 by Mike Dussault

I thought they picked their spots with the hurry up, they did catch the Panthers with 12 men once. But overall I was more impressed that they stayed so balanced. I thought they would spread them out more, but they must’ve felt like they could move it on the ground. Ideally you want to be balanced so I think that’s a positive and I think we’ll see a fairly balanced attack this weekend as well.

“Usually, when he sees what it is, he gets to the play he wants to get to and I would say they’ve hit a lot of big plays on plays like that. He sees a blitz, calls a tear screen to Demaryius Thomas and it goes 75 yards for a touchdown. You can be in whatever you want to be in but if they have a play to beat it and it’s well-executed, which it frequently is with Denver, you’re just playing right into their hands. “They’ve waiting all day to run the play against that situation. You tell them, ‘Here we are, we’re going to be in Cover-2 zone, go ahead run your best play.’ Well, they will. We’re going to be in “man-free” or we’re going to be in blitz or we’re going to be in “man-under 2-deep,” what are you going to do about it? Well, they can usually do something about it. I don’t really think anybody has had a lot of success playing that way.

You have to play good team defense,” Patriots coach Bill Belichick explained this week. “That’s all there is to it. It’s not just, ‘Take one guy away in their offense.’ They have a lot of weapons, they execute very well. Peyton does a tremendous job of getting in good plays and making good decisions, taking what’s there, what the defense allows you to have and he’s very, very accurate with the ball. Everybody is just going to have to do their job. You can’t just shut down one guy. I don’t think that will even come anywhere close to stopping them, they have way too many people that will kill you.

What are your thoughts on the O line? I watched the game on Game Rewind and while there were plays where Brady had plenty of time to throw, there were also many plays where he didn’t have a clean pocket. It reminded me a bit of the last two Super Bowls. Reason to be concerned or does the Bills’ D line deserve some credit?

Very good question. Here’s how PFF graded them out: Vollmer: 3.6 (1 hurry) Solder: 2.8 (4 hurries) Mankins: 2.8 (2 hurries) Wendell: .9 (2 hits, 1 hurry) Connolly: -.7 (1 sack, 1 hurry, 1 hit) You have to give some credit to Mike Pettine and the Buffalo defense. Pettine knows how to mask his coverages […]
