I don’t think any of our backs have an issue that I would say would prevent them from being a productive player,” he said, in remarks that seem to reflect his view that Ridley’s mistakes are correctable. “Look, there are some plays that happen in football that are plays that happen in football. Then there are other plays that are caused by a lack of discipline, a lack of technique, just carelessness. Those are the ones we have to eliminate.

ReFo: Broncos @ Patriots, Week 12 | ProFootballFocus.com

Veteran Aqib Talib manned up with Thomas, allowing 3-of-6 into his coverage for 30 yards and a touchdown with one pass break up to his name. The stats may flatter a bit when you consider Thomas dropped two passes in his coverage, but the constant close coverage ensured Manning was rarely prepared to test his arm against the ball skills of the former Buccaneer. That left Logan Ryan and Kyle Arrington trying to stop Welker and Decker, and as the combined 6.0 grade shows, you can consider that mission accomplished. The two were targeted seven times in coverage with the result two receptions for 15 yards, two pass break-ups and one interception. If they’d found a way to stop Jacob Tamme then it could have been a whole different ball game.

It’s difficult sometimes for people to have close relationships and friendships when they are this high a level of competitors, but a lot of that changed when Tom Brady was hurt. The first call he got, or one of the first calls he got, was from Peyton Manning. Peyton Manning called several times after that. It kind of changed Tommy’s thoughts toward Peyton. And then when Peyton got hurt, Tommy reached out to him. The injury and the realization that their football mortality someday would end really changed the two and how they approach one another. They started sharing more information. And Tommy told me this week that one of the most interesting things was when Peyton Manning was getting ready to make a decision as to who he was going to sign with, he reached out to Tommy and wanted to exchange information, and he wanted to know what Tom thought would be a good idea for him to do. Amazing how this relationship has evolved over the years from two top competitors.

But a hundred years from now when we’re sitting around during TV timeouts of the Hunger Games, we’ll be talking about one thing: “We’ll Take the Wind.” Just the gutsiest, most self-assured move in a career full of them. Where Belichick just hung his titanium testicles out in the wind and if Denver had marched down and punched it in, the whole nation would be standing in line for their chance to kick him in them with steel toed boots. It was 4th & 2 all over again only this time it won them the game. Like he told his team after that one, I made the call because I believe in you and I don’t apologize for it. And like the mics caught him saying on his “A Football Life,” “If we call this, we better fucking get it.” Well they got it. I just hope the country gives him as much credit this time as they friggin’ flambe’d him that time.

Chat: Chat with Tedy Bruschi – SportsNation – ESPN Boston

Bruschi: [Jamie] Collins was productive last night and you saw a lot of positive things – 10 total tackles. He had some positive plays in coverage. But your playing time on this defense will depend on the game-plan of the week. If this was a team that had a different offensive philosophy, maybe you’d see a little bit less of Collins. The Patriots were mostly in sub defense last night. So do they now consider him the sub LB? In a game when you might play more regular personnel, we might not see him as much. But you can call this is a big step in his development. Biggest game of the year, against a top-ranked, and he played and produced. He can use this momentum to earning more playing time.

They’re the scrappy team that wins games they have no business competing in. Spotting Manning two-dozen points with the help of three first-quarter fumbles and still winning? Giving him the ball in overtime not once, but twice, and still winning? That stuff just doesn’t happen. It shouldn’t. It takes a certain amount of audacity to stare down those odds and shrug at them. But that’s what these Patriots do. It’s who they are, and that sh*t is crazy.

Patriots Mini-Camp Day 2 Wrap

Never fun when real work and fake work (i.e. blogging) collide because the one that pays me is going to win out every time, and that ain’t blogging. But that doesn’t mean I didn’t have one eyeball on all things Patriots mini-camp related today. Some points of interest to pass along: It seems like a […]
