Measuring Growth: Patriots Draft Picks Jamie Collins, Duron Harmon and Logan Ryan Take Next Step vs. Broncos | NEPatriotsDraft.com – 2014 NFL Draft
Great read from Oliver Thomas! Ironically I was pondering this same topic for my Friday B/R piece, but Oliver hit it out of the park so I’ll be focusing on Dane Fletcher for that one.
The Patriots pull off a Comeback for the Ages. Belichick, just a few years after going for it on 4th & 2 from his own end because he couldn’t trust his defense to stop Manning, gives him the ball in OT and dares him to beat us. The Broncos get three touches after tying it up, any one of which could put the game away, and can’t close the Patriots out. Brady throws for more yards into a typhoon than Manning had all game. Against a Pats defense that’s missing two captains and a starting safety and is populated by rookies, undrafted free agents and guys hobbling around on bad legs. And more to the point, the Patriots fucking won. So what’s the takeaway across the country? How do the full time Manning apologists spin it? It was the weather. It was “a horribly unlucky play in overtime.”

I’ll give FoPP’er Jerry Thornton the final word on the Broncos game. Still a good chance we see these Broncos again, but it’s time to turn the page and focus on winning the last six games and wrapping up a first round bye, if not the number one seed.

Patriots defensive gameplan vs. Broncos
Good tweet from Matt Chatham showing how the Pats sold out against the pass and let the Broncos take what they could on the ground. Forcing continued execution and not allowing any big plays is “bend, don’t break” at its finest.

But outside of a couple audacious calls he makes each season, Belichick isn’t an especially strange coach. It’s not like the Patriots’ defense is Finnegans Wake, scheme-wise. They do what works and remain flexible. The only reason Troy Brown ever played nickel corner for the Pats is because the team didn’t have a halfway-decent nickel corner, not because his coach was trying to show the rest of the league he could use a slot receiver in his secondary and still win games. Belichick isn’t inscrutable. The refrain of his most famous speech is “Do your job.” He decided, before a Super Bowl, to remind his team that football is about execution. That’s about as orthodox as it gets.
Nice little read on BB. One thing that always kind of annoys me is people who call BB a genius and then hold it against him when he makes wrong decisions or his team loses. I simply prefer to think of him as one of the best football coaches of all time, and we can save the “genius” label for those who actually deserve it.
