Belichick believes in doing whatever’s possible to eliminate the opponents’ greatest strength. As record-setting back-to-back 200-yard receiving games attests, Cleveland’s greatest strength is Gordon. But if Tanney has to play, Belichick could elect to play with base personnel (to stop the run) and focus a safety primarily on breakout tight end Jordan Cameron. In Cleveland’s system, Cameron runs a lot of shallow crossing patterns, which would figure to be a security blanket for the untested Tanney. It’d make sense to take that away even if it means leaving Talib alone against Gordon.

We hadn’t seen the vintage Brady consistently until this month with only the agonizing (controversial?) defeat to the Panthers in Week 11 robbing him of just about the perfect month. Stellar comebacks against the Broncos and Texans earned him an honorable mention in the Team of the Month behind Russell Wilson.

Instead of adding a fifth defensive back against all three-receiver packages, the Patriots sometimes subbed out a safety (Duron Harmon/Steve Gregory) in favor of a third cornerback (Kyle Arrington). So while they technically remained in a base defense with four players in the secondary, it had a sub-package element to it.

Nick Caserio, director of player personnel, New England Patriots: He seamlessly took the reins from Scott Pioli as New England’s personnel maven. Although he’s considered to be a little introverted, Caserio’s known to be principled and strong in his evaluations. League-wide perception, though, is that he’s not going anywhere.

In regards to your question, if the patriots played the broncos I think the patriots would win, brady has owned the defense and I think belichick would come up with something for manning, however for some reason I feel that if the patriots played the ravens in the playoffs it could get ugly, they can run the ball and have shown that they can contain the patriots offense on occasion, your response

I think a Broncos-Patriots re-match would likely be a shootout and whichever team made the clutch plays late in the fourth quarter would win. I like the Patriots chances, but you couldn’t write off the Broncos especially at home.

As for the Ravens, we’ll get a great preview in a couple weeks. I think back-to-back road games at Miami and Baltimore is just what this Patriots team needs. It’s two more experiences in hostile environments and this team hasn’t exceeded in those kind of places in recent years.

I think the Ravens are a good defense, but are they the same defense that didn’t fear Brady? Not really. I think Lewis and Reed were on their last legs last year, but they knew how to play Brady. Not sure Baltimore is still that defense. We’ll get a chance to see, at least once.
