That transition from a quarterback to a wide receiver position, that’s a hard thing to do,” Moss said of Edelman, who played quarterback at Kent State and was drafted in the seventh round as a kick returner and potential Wildcat quarterback. “When guys are able to come from the bottom and work their way to the top, and when all odds and everything are stacked against you and you’re able to overcome that, that’s what makes Julian Edelman’s story so sweet.

This year, he’s taken things a step further. Spikes will play in all 16 games despite a knee ligament injury that has limited him in practice for about two months (a league source said Spikes will require surgery when the season ends). Asked about the knee and how much pain he’s been dealing with, Spikes grimaces a bit, but then gives an answer that would probably make his linebacking idol, hard-nosed Hall of Famer Dick Butkus, smile. “It’s pretty banged up, but this deep in the season, everybody’s banged up,” Spikes said. “I’ve been able to deal with the pain and stuff like that. “And when I’m out there, my adrenaline is pumping and the thrill of it, but it’s part of the game. That’s what makes this game so good — you’ve got to be able to play through pain.

Good work by ESPN.com Ravens reporter Jamison Hensley to challenge Baltimore head coach John Harbaugh’s thought that the team didn’t “have enough juice” against the Patriots last weekend after playing a Monday night road game six days prior. As Hensley noted, teams playing Monday night this season are 16-15 the following week. Those playing a Monday night game on the road were 7-9 the following week, which includes the Patriots’ dramatic comeback win over the Broncos on Nov. 24. As for the Ravens, they had won four straight and had a chance to win the AFC North with a victory over the Patriots and then today at Cincinnati. If you can’t get juiced up for that …

The Patriots will be tested by the Bills. Buffalo’s defense surged to the top of our Pressure Points rankings for the season with a dominant performance last week against the Dolphins (see below for all of Week 16′s pressure rankings). The Patriots have a much better line, but the Bills are just that good under defensive coordinator Mike Pettine, who knows a few tricks for slowing Tom Brady down from his time with the Jets. Still, expect the Patriots’ defense to come up with a few key plays to give the offense some short fields and New England to win an important game for seeding.

How can we not agree with Bedard? Almost every game, regardless of opponent, has gone down to the wire. Last week’s blowout of the Ravens was easily then exception, so expect another near-heart attack today. Can’t even imagine how I’m going to make it through a playoff game with this team, though I guess I should be used to it.

But here come the Patriots anyway, relentless figures emerging from the miasma, barely breaking stride as they step over your team’s smoldering carcass and head back to the playoffs.

Really good read from Tim Graham on why everyone hates us. I get it. I’d hate us too.

I always enjoy watching the behind-the-scenes and sideline footage on the weekly Patriots All-Access television show. What stood out to me this past week: Quarterback Tom Brady going up to rookie offensive guard Josh Kline, who made his first career NFL start against the Ravens last Sunday, and giving him an embrace in the locker room after the game while personally saluting him for a job well done. Imagine what had to be going through Kline’s head at that moment. Last year at this time, he was playing for Kent State. Then he went undrafted and was a long shot to make the Patriots. He bounced back and forth between the practice squad and active roster, and then to rise up like he did last Sunday … any way you look at it, just a neat story.

Assuming no dramatic turnover disparity between the two teams this weekend, whether or not the Bills can be competitive in this game will come down to whether or not they play to the strengths of their personnel and go positive on first down in critical situations. From the Patriots’ perspective, their ability to prevent success […]
