Competition fuels Julian Edelman’s fire – ESPN Boston

MUST READ ALERT!!!!!!

Edelman is a marked man in these playoffs, and he knows it. Practice has been edgy this week in preparation for the Colts. There’s chance a punch or two has been thrown, though Arrington would only smile knowingly when asked for confirmation. “That’s Edelman,” Arrington said. “Man, I love that guy.”

The bye week was huge,” he said. “I’m sure everyone saw me hobbling around. It was nice to get that extra week of treatment in … It’s going [well], it’s improved every day.

Tough-minded Logan Mankins talks ankle injury – ESPN Boston

So good to see Mankins has practiced all week. Good sign and I’d bet if he played on a torn ACL he barely even needs an ankle at all to play this weekend and play well.

Without Brandon Spikes: Charting the Response of the Patriots Linebackers | NEPatriotsDraft.com – 2014 NFL Draft

Good stuff from Oliver Thomas. I think we’ll see the Pats mostly in nickel this weekend where they can minimize the impact of losing Spikes. Still, if we thought the run defense was bad before 55 went down, I’m scared to imagine what it might look like now.

It was a challenge I made to myself, because I saw the way we play here,” Vereen said earlier this week in one of the tunnels at Gillette Stadium. “I had never been a part of a team that is so physically tough—and mentally tough. Once I got that hint, and decided that I needed to be tougher, that’s kind of when things mentally started changing for me.

Shane Vereen toughened up and became Patriots’ most versatile weapon | The MMQB with Peter King

Good read from Bedard, though Vereen’s numbers the last three games have been paltry and he’s dealing with a groin injury now as well. I’m sure the two are a bit related, but the Pats will really need Vereen to return to form in the playoffs, he’s one of the few playmakers they have left.

More on this coming tomorrow in my B/R column…

Five Trade Bait Patriots

WIth news of Derek Rivers being flown back to Boston for an MRI on his knee and Kony Ealy getting banged up (but returning) in joint practices with the Texans, the Patriots already-precarious and inexperienced depth just took another blow. They’re down to Trey Flowers and Geneo Grissom as their only two fully healthy ends. […]
