Although a bit bigger in body type at 6-foot, 205 pounds and some room to grow, Harmon offers a bit more range than Gregory (5-11, 200), with a few examples of this showing up in the fourth quarter of the Dec. 22 game against the Ravens when he broke out to the sideline to create disruption on incomplete deep passes to receivers Torrey Smith (7:03 remaining) and Marlon Brown (6:52 remaining). Similar to most young players, the biggest issue for Harmon was consistency over his extended defensive snaps (36.9 percent), as there were times when his overall play/tackling dipped (e.g. vs. Houston, Dec. 2).

The Pats won’t release Amendola. Why? Because its a short sited move and that’s not how they operate. Sure they save 2,8 mil this year, but next year it adds even more than that to the cap. They could keep Amendola and accomplish the same thing by structuring contracts to pay more next year. Consider that Edelman has played only 1 healthy season. Is it worth dumping Amendola so that you can move about 3 mil from this years cap to next? No way.

Fair points, there’s an element of risk with both players. Really both have only had one healthy season in their careers, though Amendola has probably shown more consistency as a receiver.

I guess in a vacuum I’d prefer Edelman back, but I also think that Amendola should be effective if he stays and Edelman walks, assuming he put together a healthy season. He has to at some point, right?

Ultimately I know the Pats will do what they think is best for the team long term. If that means eating some contract money on Amendola in 2015 because they think Edelman is the better player, I don’t think it will stop them.

I think will allow us to collect more data real time in the field, have the draft evaluation process done quicker and sooner, and allow the coaches, if they want to in season, because they’re trying to evaluate a position now and thinking about the next year, [find out] are there going to be guys in the draft? In the old days, you’d have to pick up the phone and call upstairs and talk to somebody upstairs. Now, if Bill is interested, he’ll be able to go to his tablet or go to his desktop and in a very efficient and very multimedia way and get real data instantly…

Brady was rated pretty highly on the board and in the fifth round — we took Brady in the sixth — Bill walked over to the board and picked up Brady’s card, looked at Scott, and said ‘what’s Brady still doing here? There’s too much value to be sitting here. This kid’s a winner.’

Mike — Quick, on a scale of 1-10, how excited are you that the Pats are going to: a) trade Amendola, b) re-sign Edelman, c) Trade for Revis and, d) sign Decker, Sanders, Orakpo, Allen, Tate, Mack, Bryant, and (hopefully) Moss in free agency? Every. Friggin’. Off-season. :)

March 2, 2014 by Mike Dussault

a) 8, but that they’ll release him.

b) 10, I’m bumping the Edelman return chances from 40% to 60%.

c) 3, never going to happen but fun to imagine.

d) 10, Moss AND Welker are coming back.
