Patriots may take look with Logan Ryan at safety | Boston Herald

Patriots may take look with Logan Ryan at safety | Boston Herald

Don’t get this report about Logan Ryan moving to free safety at all. I get that Ryan is promising and is kind of in a log jam at cornerback at the moment, but as much as the Patriots want to put their best guys on the field, I don’t think they want to do it at the expense of not putting them in the best position to succeed.

Ryan seems like he does have the skillset to play safety, but here are the other factors:

– Moving Devin McCourty to strong safety would be his third position change in five seasons. Not that it’s that much different than free safety, but McCourty excelled last season at free safety.

– Duron Harmon looked pretty promising to me last year, especially showing great back end range that might even be better than McCourty’s. I also think he’s the more physical player than Ryan.

– Ryan excelled in the slot and blitzing (see the second Jets game). Maybe strong safety makes more sense for him, but it’s not like he’s the thumper everyone is hoping for.

Ultimately I think you let Ryan go head-to-head with Arrington to start in the slot. Harmon should get the initial first-team reps at strong safety and then let things play out from there.

Maybe Harmon sputters. Maybe Arrington gets hurt. Things can change quickly. But to throw everything into chaos just to put Ryan on the back end of the defense seems extreme to me at this point.

No question, he’s a good player who needs to be on the field, but he was in a similar position last offseason as a rookie, behind a bunch of vets on the depth chart, and then due to injuries he ended up playing a significant role.

Point is, this doesn’t have to be figured out on paper in March.

Patriots must shift offensive focus to men in the middle

Manning, however, said he wanted to pick the team first, before any negotiations would ensue, meaning Condon was now down to one team to negotiate with. And when Manning picked Denver, he simply asked Condon: “What does Tom Brady make?” “$18 million a year.” “Then I don’t want to make a penny more than that.” Condon’s visions of a $25 million a year deal were dashed, although the Broncos’ opening offer was $19.4 million a year. Condon phoned to tell Manning, who was incensed: “I told you I didn’t want to make more than Brady!” Condon apologized, hung up and called Manning’s wife, who responded, “I’ll take care of it,” and coaxed Manning to accept the Broncos’ offer.

Peyton really makes it hard to hate him. Luckily he has an awful QB “look” and that goes a long way for me.

What Are the Patriots’ Remaining Options at Defensive End? | Bleacher Report

Great read from Frenz on what is one of the biggest things to watch going forward the rest of this offseason – who will be the third defensive end on the depth chart behind Chandler and Nink?

Two Patriots mock drafts

March 25, 2014 by Mike Dussault

Couple of mock drafts to pass along today from two of the best Pats writers out there – Doug Kyed of NESN.com and Steve Balestrieri of PatsFans.com.

You’ll find similar themes in both and even the same player – CJ Fiedorowicz, possibly my own favorite tight end in this class. Both are addressing the trenches and tight end with some solid Pats fits at whatever positions later in the draft.

I think this is the way it’s going to go. The must get some good young depth, especially at interior offensive line.

I am always encouraged when I see other guys like Doug and Steve out there picking guys that I have on my big board already. I’ll be dropping that in the next week by the way, just need to get from 72 down to 50.

Between Belichick cautioning reporters to “verify”, Wilfork stating his pending comments will be his “FIRST” remarks and owner Robert Kraft saying Monday he “surely hopes” that Wilfork will remain with the team, there seems to be a cooling off in progress since Wilfork cleaned out his locker and took down his nameplate. What’s emerged in the past 18 hours is that, while the situation with Wilfork isn’t ideal, it is salvageable.

PatsPosits: Counting down to more counting down

The draft is here! Tonight! Probably. If not, tomorrow because you know the Pats are probably going to ditch 32 for a high second rounder. I can’t let today pass without a brief lament for the old days when the entire draft was on s weekend and I’d just sit around eating and drinking all […]
