Quick-hit thoughts around NFL & Patriots – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston

Good stuff throughout this one, including some interesting commentary on Wilfork’s deal. I always thought Wilfork was needed and has proved his far more than just a run-stuffing nose tackle. But I also think that it’s unquestionable the Patriots over-relied on him from 2010-2012, especially be making him play extensively on passing downs. He has value in those situations, but I think the team and player would’ve been better served if they had had other players to rotate with Wilfork in the more traditional upfield defensive tackle mold.

[T}he Patriots do hold a fifth-year option on Solder, one that must be exercised prior to May 3 of this year. That option, which is for all first-round picks of the 2011 draft, would be equal to the average salaries of the third through the 25th highest paid players at the position — in this case, offensive line — at the end of the restricted free-agent signing period. There’s no word yet on whether or not the Patriots would be interested in picking up that option.

What should we expect at their best and worst from an offensive line that has remained the same for the last three years

March 28, 2014 by Mike Dussault

The bottom line is continuity and they’re solid. I still would love to take a center or guard in the second or third round and let them duke it out with Wendell and Connolly in camp. I’ve had just about enough of the undersized try-hards in the middle who get dominated like Terrence Knighton dominated them in the AFC Championship.

And it’s not like Dante Scarnecchia is there anymore to make miracles happen with guys who didn’t even play college football (Stephen Neal).

But again, bottom line, they were pretty good the last two years. Maybe, if things remain this way into another regular season, they can improve and put together a playoff run of solid protection.

But I’m dying for some sizable reinforcements in the draft.

Alfonzo Dennard carted off from Patriots OTA

Never good when the cart comes out, hopefully there’s enough time for him to get healthy before training camp, but Ras-I continues to impress, so he better hurry. Patriots OTA concluding. CB Alfonzo Dennard left practice late, with help of a cart. Injury appeared to be left arm/shoulder. — Mike Reiss (@MikeReiss) June 4, 2013 […]
