I’m not sold on the idea that some DE from the draft can fix their pass rush woes unless the idea is to throw as many darts as possible and see which ones stick. Buchannon, Bequette, and whoever they probably draft are all mid rounders and as such all probably have a similar talent and skill set. nothing’s to say that the guy they draft ends up being just like Bequette and Buchannon. I’m most optimistic about Buchannon and hope Better CB and DT play helps all the DEs get better pressure.

It’s pretty amazing that last year heading into camp one of the biggest questions was how does all this tight end depth play out. Then they cut almost everyone, with Buchanan winning the DPR role out of camp and we see Nink/Chandler essentially never come off the field with Andre Carter coming on late in the season.

There’s no question that better cornerback and defensive tackle play will help the pass rush. And really, there’s a lot more to defensive ends than pass rush. It’s a part of the equation, but nearly as important as setting the edge, playing strong at the point of attack, etc.

I think the real question is can they find a legitimate threat as a designated pass rusher. Mark Anderson in 2011, pre-Carter injury, is the only time they ever really had that threat and we saw the results. Had Carter not gone down, the Pats very well closed out the Giants in the Super Bowl.

Buchanan could still be that guy, but I think you’re right, they need to throw more at the wall and I’m sure that will happen in the draft and late free agency.

Todd McShay’s insight on top interior OL – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston

For all the DL/DE/TE mock picks we’ve seen I continue to believe that interior OL is a real possibility. These are some great names and Su’a-Filo and Gabe Jackson are two of my favorites.

Given that the Patriots could use both additional pass-rushing and D-line depth, is there a way for them to double dip by drafting a ‘one-gapping’ D-lineman who can get into the backfield? Would it be ‘cheaper’ in the draft than a DE and would a player like that be able to make an impact in his first year?

April 24, 2014 by Mike Dussault

You’re speaking my language, brother. Defensive Ends and Linebackers are the only positions anyone talks about when it comes to pass rush, but really the best and most effective pass rushers are those coming from the inside.

As I’ve said over and over again in recent years, the Pats were deficient in this area because they tended to have more nose tackle-types inside. It worked well in protecting against sub-runs and Wilfork was clearly a beast inside that caused problems, but they just didn’t have that upfield presence and I think they really paid for it on third-and-longs. They were the third-worst defense in the NFL from 2010-2013 on 3rd-and-8-plus yards.

So yes, I think guys like Chris Jones (as part of a rotation, not playing 90% of the snaps), Armond Armstead and even Chandler sliding inside should help the interior rush. But a guy like Easley, who embodies all that I want, would really be a great addition.

There’s still a place for big space eaters, but they just need to have more depth with different kinds of d-linemen.

They say the best way to beat Brady is to constantly pressure him and knock him on the ground, isn’t that how you are supposed to stop most quarterbacks, what makes it so special against Brady and manning compared to other quarterbacks

April 24, 2014 by Mike Dussault

Nothing, it’s silly talk. Specifically to Brady and Manning though I go back to some great insight that Eric Mangini gave on NFL Live a few years ago.

His main points: you must disguise pre-snap, “if you’re not lying, you’re not trying”. Having a different game plan to start the second half to give Brady/Belichick something to think about and then going back to the stuff that was working in the first half. Finally, long sustained drives on offense.

Watch the 2010 Pats-Browns game to see this game plan executed perfectly. Also helped that the Pats didn’t show up to play that day.

When mccourty first moved to safety what were your thoughts and why do you think he flourished as a safety compared to as a corner

April 24, 2014 by Mike Dussault

I think he was a little better as a zone corner but had good size and that’s what might’ve spurred the change. There was also just a void at safety in 2011 and 2012 when injuries and poor performance started piling up, so it was also partially by necessity.
