With the Patriots bolstering their secondary with Darrelle Revis, a player like third-year defensive end Chandler Jones could be a primary beneficiary of better coverage. He had six sacks as a rookie and followed that up with 11.5 last season. Could he hit 15 this season? As long as he stays healthy, it wouldn’t surprise me.

I think the thing with Chandler is knowing when to turn it on. That’s what Belichick mentioned once with Lawrence Taylor – when the game was on the line and it was a gotta-have-it play, that’s when Taylor was at his best.

Chandler’s flashed a lot of athleticism and versatility in his first two years, but I think the final step is to make those big, gotta-have-it plays.

I’m happy to help the young guys if they have questions for me. We’re all in this together,” Slater said. “We all have the same goal. Like I said, I still feel like a kid who’s out there in recess, playing football and having a blast. I still have a lot of joy. I’m just so happy to represent this team and play with the teammates I have.

Good read from Mark Daniels. As I’ve said before, as long as Matthew Slater never returns another kick, and I’d prefer to never see him lining up at wide receiver as well, he’s one of the key cogs of the current Patriots. The 2000s featured special team aces like Larry Izzo and Matt Chatham. Now Slater carries that torch. Not bad for a guy who didn’t have a position in college and who Belichick got roasted for drafting.

I was deep into this project when ESPN Insider published Sam Monson’s piece highlighting Brady’s diminished production while under pressure. Monson questioned Brady’s status as one of the top five QBs. Still, none of the people I spoke with thought Brady had slipped to a significant degree. Twenty-five of the 26 voters put him in the first tier. The lone exception, a pro personnel evaluator, saved his only Tier 1 vote for Peyton Manning. He was an unusually tough grader at the top, focused more intently than others on the 2013 season, when Manning performed at a historic level.

Of course the main point here? All these rankings mean absolutely nothing. Brady’s still good, but on any given play or game he might not have the best outcome. Or maybe he will. That’s why sports are fun. Having everything and everyone ranked in a nice little box takes the fun out of it.

1. Tom Brady, QB, Patriots: He does more with less. He could take any team in the AFC and win the division.

Plenty of Pats on this list, including a somewhat surprising Jerod Mayo.
