At this point, we’re just kind of in the generic, everybody learn how to do your job within the context of the defense, working with different people, different combinations at safety, cornerback, defensive line, whatever it happens to be, just get everybody working together.

“As an offense at this time last year, we really didn’t know where we were at. I think it’s a real benefit to our offense knowing what guys are capable of, knowing the skill set they have to compete at an NFL level. “That’s the difference between a rookie year and a second year. Guys have done it, proved it, and now you have confidence going into the next season that we’re actually good at some things. And those are the things you want to build on. “

A big part of football is seizing opportunity and second-year receiver Kenbrell Thompkins is doing just that. He’s taking repetitions that likely would have been Aaron Dobson’s and making plays that catch the eye.

The rookie signal-caller, meanwhile, showed some growing pains down in the red zone and on the goal line. He waited for windows to open as the light pass rush circled. He overthrew a few open windows, including one to wideout Brandon LaFell. And he ultimately threw a pair of interceptions to special-teams linebacker Chris White and first-year cornerback Daxton Swanson.

Important not to read too much into Garoppolo this early, but he should start to build some momentum. Looking forward to seeing how he moves the offense in the preseason.

Duron Harmon, Tavon Wilson, and Patrick Chung all took turns as the starting strong safeties in team drills.

Patriots Training Camp Notes: Competition Brewing on Offensive Line – Extra Points – Boston.com

The job certainly won’t be handed to Duron Harmon and in recent days I’ve been wondering more and more if maybe Tavon Wilson bounces back and shows some fight this year.

Rookie CB Daxton Swanson had a stellar mini-camp, and he carried it over with a fine performance on Friday. He notched a pass break-up on a throw from Brady to LaFell, and made a difficult interception on an errant pass by Garoppolo. Swanson is a dark horse candidate for the roster.

Friday Tweets of Note from Patriots Training Camp

July 25, 2014 by Mike Dussault

Looks like we have our first injury of the preseason as Greg Orton went down and was carted off. As I flipped on Sportscenter this morning (a somewhat rare occurance) I immediately noticed a player down and being tended to by the training staff. It was a tense few moments until someone said it was Orton. Nothing against him, just grateful it wasn’t someone at the higher end of the depth chart. Hope he’s okay.

Here are some tweets that stood out to me today…

Dan Connolly got a lot of time in at center. He certainly has versatility. I thought Josh Kline got some good looks, too.

— Mark Daniels (@MarkDanielsPJ) July 25, 2014

Been saying that Connolly has an advantage over Wendell in that he’s versatile. Wendell’s only a center and it could cost him a job.

Not a good day for Garoppolo. Intercepted by Chris White and Daxton Swanson, among the many incompletions.

— Jeff Howe (@jeffphowe) July 25, 2014

Swanson’s going to be one to keep an eye on this preseason

Very active day for Vereen catching passes. White ran the wrong route and drew some ire for it.

— Jeff Howe (@jeffphowe) July 25, 2014

Kyle Arrington and Julian Edelman got into a brief shoving match late in Patriots training camp practice.

Thompkins just had another diving TD catch, this time while being covered by Revis.

— Mark Daniels (@MarkDanielsPJ) July 25, 2014

Gronk said he’s not going to change his “smashing and dashing” physical style of play due to injuries.

Chandler Jones up to tall task – BostonHerald.com

Chandler Jones up to tall task – BostonHerald.com Good breakdown from Jeff Howe on Chandler Jones’ opening game. While Jones is viewed as the Patriots’ pass-rushing answer, he is very good against the run. He stunted inside in the first quarter to stop Chris Johnson for a 3-yard loss, and Jones also works off his […]
