With this logan mankins trade, is it reasonable to think the patriots will probably be going back to that 2 TE scheme that was so successful with Hernandez and Gronk?

August 26, 2014 by Mike Dussault

In theory of course this makes sense, but they barely have enough healthy tight ends for a one tight end scheme right now so they’ll have to take what they can get.

I think we tend to put the cart before the horse a little too much when relating personnel to scheme. I don’t think the scheme is necessarily what comes first except in very general areas. I don’t believe there was ever an edict of “we must go to a two-tight end offense prior to 2010/2011. They needed tight ends, picked up a couple for what they believed were good value in the draft and both happened to pick up the offense quickly and compliment each other very well.

It’s more about getting good players who fit the style of the team and then letting things play out so you can understand what you have and what you can do well.

I think the Patriots offense right now looks as varied as an offense can be. There are little quick guys, there are long, outside guys, there’s a full back who can do a little of everything, an all-around tight end, a move tight end, and three running backs who also have their own unique skill sets.

The Pats could run almost any personnel packages and be effective, whether it’s 12 (1 RB, 2 TE), 11 (1 RB, 1 TE), 22 (2 RB, 2 TE), 21 (2 RB, 1 TE) or even empty sets.

They will give opposing defenses a lot to prepare for and should be able to attack any weakness they want.

Good take as always from Greg Bedard.

Logan Mankins is everything we would ever want in a football player. It is hard to imagine a better player at his position, a tougher competitor or a person to represent our program. He is one of the all-time great Patriots and the best guard I ever coached. Logan brought a quiet but unmistakable presence and leadership that will be impossible to duplicate. Unfortunately, this is the time of year when difficult decisions have to be made – and this is one of the most difficult we will ever make – but like every other decision it was made for what we feel is in the best interests of the team.

Patriots Annual Shocker: Logan Mankins sent to Tampa Bay for TE Tim Wright

August 26, 2014 by Mike Dussault

If you’ve been following the Patriots for long, you might be familiar with their penchant for stunning trades during the last week of preseason, usually over Labor Day weekend. The most famous example came in 2009 when they sent Richard Seymour to Oakland.

The trend continued today with the Pats sending starting guard and captain Logan Mankins to the Tamp Bay Buccaneers for move tight end Tim Wright and a fourth-round draft pick.

The move also opens up a bunch of cap space for the Pats.

As that tweet speculates, this could very well be a precursor to an extension for Revis, but the Pats were going to have to deal with Mankins’ contract at some point and they tend to cut ties a year too early rather than a year too late.

The Pats were razor-thin at tight end and really had no move “F” tight end on their roster. Wright should provide another weapon for Tom Brady after picking up 54 catches and five touchdowns as a rookie in 2013.

There is definitely a role for Wright on the Pats.

Tim Wright ran a 4.65 40 with a 4.47 short shuttle, 7.27 3 cone, 9’10" broad jump, 36" vert at 6-3, 219 pounds at Rutgers pro day last March

As for the offensive line, my bet would be that they stick with Connolly at right guard and Ryan Wendell at center as they have the last two seasons, while Josh Kline slips into Makins’ left guard spot. Kline did well there in 2013 against the Ravens and the Pats have never been shy about getting their young offensive linemen in the lineup.

Bryan Stork, Jon Halapio and Jordan Devey should continue to develop and could challenge for starting spots not too far down the line.

Shocking trades and personnel moves are nothing new to Bill Belichick. The first was the famous release of Lawyer Milloy in 2003 and this move with Mankins fits the mold of those that came before – high-priced veterans whose play and value don’t quite match what they’re making.

All eyes should be on Wright this Thursday against the Giants, as well as what the offensive line looks like.

Up-to-minute New England Patriots Depth Chart

4:50pm EST Update – The Pats are now at 75.

Surprising to see them cut 6th-round pick Jemea Thomas at this point, as Daxton Swanson and Shamiel Gary look to get noticed in the final preseason game.
