October 22, 2020 by Tom Shaw-Mellors

Week 7 already! Pats have a bunch of players back in practice and should be focused on getting back to winnings ways. On Sunday the 3-3 San Francisco 49ers travel to Gillette Stadium to take on the 2-4 New England Patriots.

Date: Sunday, October 25, 2020
Game Time: 4:25 PM EST
Venue: Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, MA
Network: CBS (Jim Nantz & Tony Romo)
All-time record: 49ers lead series 8-5-0

When They Last Met…

Patriots 30-17 Broncos
November 20, 2016

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

The Patriots won the toss and deferred possession to begin the first quarter, San Fran had a quick three and out before punting. Then, Tom Brady got to work.

After driving down to the 49ers four-yard line, Brady found Julian Edelman in the back corner of the end zone for the opening touchdown. The 49ers stalled on the following drive and settled for a field goal.

A 44-yard cannonball run by LeGarrette Blount got the Patriots deep into 49er territory to end the first quarter. On the first play of the second, Brady dumped off a screen pass to James White who rocketed his way into the end zone for a nine-yard touchdown.

Colin Kaepernick then established a good drive for San Francisco with a mixture of pass and run which ended with him finding Vance McDonald for an 18-yard touchdown. Halftime Patriots 13-10 49ers.

Patriots vs Broncos – Player Ups & Downs

October 19, 2020 by Tom Shaw-Mellors

Winslow Townson-USA TODAY Sports

A game in which many, myself included, struggled to see a scenario where Denver would come away victorious yesterday, ended up with egg on our face as the Patriots fell 18-12. Here are the ups and downs from Week 6.

Ups ⬆️

Cornerbacks

Say what you will about yesterday’s performance, but in parts, the defense played very well. More specifically, it was the CB’s who played well. Firstly, Jon Jones went 1/8 on passing targets against him and allowed just 16 yards, recorded two PBU, and one INT. Stephon Gilmore had a good game also, along with J.C. Jackson who grabbed the other of Drew Lock’s interceptions.

Whilst they did allow some chunk plays, they were instrumental in red zone defense by restricting the Broncos to just field goals all day, they were by far the best unit on the field.

The Broncos Upset the Patriots, 18-12

October 19, 2020 by Jason Pombo

Broncos upend rusty Cam Newton, Patriots, 18-12, in postponed matchup - The Boston Globe

COVID-19 has been an on-going problem for the Patriots, and have impacted their time at the facility for over two weeks. But, none-the-less, practice time and time at the facility should not be an excuse for a Bill Belichick coached team.

The Denver Broncos were coming into Gillette Stadium with a 1-3 record, with their lone victory coming against the Jets. They were even without two playmakers on offense in Melvin Gordon and Noah Fant. On top of that, the Patriots were getting Cam Newton and Stephon Gilmore back off of the COVID/RESERVE list. This game seemed like it would be an easy layup for the Patriots, but Vic Fangio and the Denver Broncos had other plans.

Patriots GameDay Supplement 10/18

October 18, 2020 by Tom Shaw-Mellors

Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY Sports

Shhh! It’s football day, we might actually see a Patriots game on a Sunday, so let’s not scare it away! Here’s your Game Day supplement for all of the latest news ahead of this afternoon’s Week 6 encounter against the Denver Broncos.

More Positive Tests…

After having their last two games re-scheduled a number of times, the Patriots finally look set to play this afternoon as scheduled. But, the COVID-19 problems still linger around the franchise. Yesterday, a report by Field Yates advised that Sony Michel, Shaq Mason, and Derek Rivers were being placed on the reserve/COVID list.

The Patriots are placing RB Sony Michel, G Shaq Mason and DE Derek Rivers all on the Reserve/COVID-19 list, per source.

— Field Yates (@FieldYates) October 17, 2020

Now, this is frustrating, but there is some reassurance that Cam is back, along with Gilmore. The team has also promoted a number of players to fill the gaps left, but far from ideal.

Roster Moves

Main Roster
DT Carl Davis (Signed from Jaguars PS)
OL Caleb Benenoch (Promoted from PS)*
DT Nick Thurman (CV19 replacement)*
WR Isaiah Zuber (CV19 replacement)*
DE Rashad Berry (CV19 replacement)*
*Main roster promotions will revert back to PS after the game

Released
TE Paul Quessenberry (PS)

Placed on reserve/COVID-19 list
RB Sony Michel
OL Shaq Mason
DE Derek Rivers

Patriots Roster Transactions 10/17

October 17, 2020 by Tom Shaw-Mellors

It feels like this is a never-ending cycle of disappointment and frustration. Per Field Yates, the Patriots have placed three more players on the reserve/COVID list, they’ve also elevated a number of players to the main roster.

Placed On Reserve/COVID List

RB Sony Michel
OL Shaq Mason
DE Derek Rivers

It’s important to remember that anyone who’s placed on the reserve/COVID list either has tested positive for COVID-19 or has been in close contact with someone who tested positive.

Promoted From Practice Squad

OL Caleb Benenoch
DE Rashod Berry (CV19 Replacement)
WR Isaiah Zuber (CV19 Replacement)
DT Nick Thurman (CV19 Replacement)

Benenoch will provide extra depth for the offensive front now Shaq Mason will miss out, Berry who was a former TE in college may get a chance to feature along with Thurman for some support at DT. I’m also delighted to see Isaiah Zuber be involved again, he’s shown some promise already this season.

Keep an eye out for my game day supplement tomorrow morning!

BREAKING- Patriots cancel Friday practice after another positive COVID-19 test

October 16, 2020 by Tom Shaw-Mellors

Photo-@MikeDussault19

First sourced by Ryan Spagnoli, the Patriots have canceled today’s planned practice session and all media for the rest of the day following another positive COVID-19 test.

https://twitter.com/Ryan_Spags/status/1317120176228368384?s=20

It’s unclear who in the organization may have tested positive, but this now cast serious doubt once again on another Patriots game week. Additional reports of a second, not yet confirmed positive test could be announced shortly.

Reporting with @FieldYates: The Patriots will be canceling their Friday practice after a positive COVID-19 test, per a source. There is also a second test they are awaiting to confirm is a positive.

What’s Next?

This is really bad, now with the Patriots and Broncos bye weeks in the books, the NFL has backed themselves into a scheduling corner of nightmares.

The one good thing is that the Pats have mostly been remote/virtually working this week and only had one practice outdoors which was yesterday, so this could be an isolated event, but forfeits may come into the fray if the team isn’t able to play the game this week.

No change to the status of the #Patriots–#Broncos game as of now, I'm told.

— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) October 16, 2020

At this time per the above tweet, there is no change to Sunday’s scheduled game.
