Defensive Front: 2 – 5 – 4. My main concern is having enough speed and strength on the second level because that is what Seattle will threaten the most with passes to the TEs and RBs and Wilson running. You also need enough strength to stop Lynch so a three safety wont work against Seahawks’ base set. Put CJ and Ayers on the edges with Wilfork and Siliga in the middle. Hopefully that is the best mix of strength and speed. Off the line would be JC – DH – RN. Play mostly single hi. Thoughts?

My feeling is that you generally use Chandler-Wilfork-Ninkovich triangle to keep Wilson in the pocket. Your extra defensive linemen, be it Siliga, Branch or Jones (maybe Ayers in third-and-long), should be used for attack the offensive right side of the Seahawks line, their weakest spot.

Then Hightower is on Lynch and we’d have a combination of Chung and Collins on Willson and Wilson.

What worries me a lot are the stunts that the Pats use on their defensive line. They’ve been effective for pass rush but there have been times that they’ve given up the edge of the defense, a huge no no against Wilson.

I think this is primarily a heavy nickel and regular game. Chung should be a big part of it, and there will be some snaps for Tavon Wilson as well.

Matt Bowen’s Super Bowl XLIX Film Study | Bleacher Report

Great preview from Matt Bowen featuring a ton of X-and-O stuff. I’ve come to expect nothing less and his Super Bowl piece is right on point.

Week 9 against Peyton Manning in early Nov. That was the last time the Patriots defense gave up more than 10 points after the half. This is a very good D that is probably pissed that all the attention is on Seattle’s D. They figure out what you are trying to run and shut it down. You’d have to like the Patriots chances if they are ahead, tied or within one score of SEA at the half. Conversely, putting aside the miracle comeback against GB, this SEA team is not built to overcome leads. Thoughts?

I think this is a good sign that once this defense locks in on an offense, they do a pretty good job. But I don’t think it necessarily means Seattle is going to get shutdown in the second half regardless. They’re a very crafty offense that can make something out of nothing better than anyone. The defense will have to get locked in quickly and stay locked in until the clock hits zero to keep Wilson et al in check.

If there’s any player on the Seahawks that can ruin another Patriots’ Super Bowl like Justin Tuck did twice for the Giants, it’s Bennett. He will find advantageous matchups against both Patriots guards (Dan Connolly and Ryan Wendell). If the Patriots don’t account for Bennett on every play, they will be in trouble offensively.

Must-read preview from Bedard, with this line jumping out at me as one of the underrated keys.

Boy, our CB depth has taken a hit this year. Shame that Roberts got hurt in preseason. I know the pats just signed Melvin but I don’t see him as a reliable option. Simply put what are your thoughts? Our front 7 is more talented than it has been in the past couple years but Iave yet to see them dominate like GB against Stl or NO against Atl last night.

Yeah it’s certainly has to be a concern, but I do what matters most is a healthy front seven and if we have to roll with Butler/Ryan/Coleman for a bit so be it. My only memory of Melvin was him with a giant target on his back for the AFCDG last year, but he’s still […]
