Who Should Be Interviewed for America’s Game: 2014 Patriots?

The problem with over-paying for someone to get a sack was very evident this last season as the Patriots and Broncos battled in November. Denver has two exceptional pass rushers in DeMarcus Ware and Von Miller, both of whom account for a total of about $17 million towards the Broncos cap. The Patriots are blocking both of these top rushers with Nate Solder and Sebastian Vollmer, both accounting for less the $7 million dollars combined in cap space. They aren’t the “top” blocking players at their positions necessarily, but they are very good players. When the Patriots also chose to play nearly the entire game in quick-passing mode where Tom Brady has the ball in his hand for typically less than three seconds, the expenditure for those top pass rushers is almost entirely negated.

In this instance, “good” coupled with a simple scheme tweak is better than “great.” As far as it relates to winning, football allows you negate the benefit of another teams concentrated expenditure. The Broncos could have gotten the exact same benefit in that particular game from pass rushers who cost half as much money, and who would allow the team to be improved in other areas where they were more vulnerable. In this instance, the “great” players were a disutility.

Who would be your ideal Pats people in the America’s Game they’re going to make this year? (you have no idea who great it felt to type that) Also, how much you wanna bet there’s at least 15 min devoted to the KC debacle?

I love this question so much, I had to put some serious thought into it. As much as I hate to take the obvious choices Belichick and Brady have to be at the top of the list and if not them, Wilfork is the third person, because they’re the ones who have been in the thick of it since the last SB win.

I mean, of course you want to hear Belichick and Brady do something they almost never do, take a retrospective on a season, and hopefully, nearly a decade of disappointment where they got so close so many times.

Edelman would be a good choice, because he’s been here a while and came from a 7th-round drafted quarterback to the most clutch offensive weapon Brady had in the playoffs. He was a huge part of this Super Bowl win.

Lastly, I wouldn’t mind a perspective from Revis/Browner/LaFell. Free agent guys who were just here for this year so we could hear an outside perspective on this Patriots team. What it was like to come to the team and what makes the Patriots difference.

Very curious to see how Garoppolo develops this year and how he does in the summer. It’s also interesting to see some glimpses of guys like James White and Tim Wright in these clips (and even Dobson too), guys who could be playing for a bigger role this year.

What’s your take on the TE position going forward? Should we expect more and better things from Tim Wright? How does he look on tape? Potential? Move on from Holman? Ideally, should the Patriots get or go after a complimentary TE to Gronk’s skills? Or somebody more similar for a more potent offense? Thank you.

As I size up the offseason, I think Wright is one of the most interesting players to see develop. I went back and took a look at Garoppolo’s preseason snaps recently and Wright was all over the place in the last game against the Giants.

Not only was he thrown into the fire with the Patriots, this was only his second season as a tight end after playing wide receiver in college. So there are a couple learning curves there.

But I think we all saw the potential last year, especially in the red zone.

For me it boils down somewhat to Wright vs. Amendola this summer (assuming Amendola is back as the 3rd WR), and that will largely dictate the direction of the offense. There should still be a spot for both, but will they lean more on the 12 personnel or 11?

In a perfect world, I think they might prefer to be more of an 12 team. We saw in 2011 and 2012 what that kind of offense is capable of, with Wright filling the Aaron Hernandez role.

I’m excited to see Wright this summer, maybe moreso than anyone else on the roster, except Easley.

As for Hooman, he’s one of the most upgradeable players on the roster, and many have him getting cut anyways.
