NFL 2015 Free Agents Ranked, 1-50 | The MMQB with Peter King

NFL 2015 Free Agents Ranked, 1-50 | The MMQB with Peter King

Fun read from Bedard and an intriguing thought for the Patriots –Jared Odrick. He could play a number of different spots for the Pats and look good next to Wilfork inside in the base nickel defense.

As for his other Patriots fit, TE Jordan Cameron, I’m not quite as sold on it. I think you need to see Tim Wright get an offseason of work in because he should be the “F” TE, the spot they’d sign Cameron for.

If anything at TE, I’d prefer a bigger blocking type to round out the squad. An upgrade to Hoomanawanui would be ideal.

If the pats free agency situation came down to deciding between the following two scenarios, which would you choose? 1) Retaining McCourty AND Revis and consequently losing a significant number of mid-tier guys or 2) losing either Revis or McCourty to leave more cap space for negotiations with several key depth/special teams players

March 3, 2015 by Mike Dussault

For me, retaining Revis is what matters most. I love McCourty, but having a free safety with range matters a whole lot less if you have a cornerback as good as Revis because they’re only going to have to cover half the field.

There’s certainly a bigger element as far as McCourty’s leadership and losing that would hurt. McCourty also can cover tight ends and do just about anything you can ask of a defensive back…

BUT…

And this is not to minimize McCourty’s talent or impact, but here are some stats to chew on as well:

Since McCourty moved full time to safety in 2012, the Patriots have given up the most 20+ yard passes in the NFL. They gave up the 4th-most 20+ passes in 2014 alone.

And they certainly have struggled vs. tight ends with the exception of 2013.

Again, this isn’t to say that either of these stats are all McCourty, but I think the impact of Revis is pretty clear in the above chart. Or to put it more simply, I think the Patriots defense is better off with Revis and Harmon at FS, than McCourty and Butler/Dennard/Ryan at CB.

How can you even appreciate the 07′ season knowing how it ended?

March 3, 2015 by Mike Dussault

At some point you can’t judge your football enjoyment based on how the season ends, because 99% of the time you’re going to be miserable. I lived the ‘07 season and from September until that final Giants’ drive there has yet to be a sports experience that replicates what that was like. There might be another 16-0 team, but it won’t be the kind of rampage like the 2007 Patriots went on.

Patriots add Ray “Bubba” Ventrone as assistant special teams coach

One of the fan favorites from 2006-08 has returned to the Pats to help coach special teams, making him the first former player on Bill Belichick’s staff after a void last season.

This play was one of the biggest of Ventrone’s career, making a great tackle to keep the Giants deep in their territory to start their final drive of Super Bowl 42. Not that it ended up mattering, but at the time, it was a big play.

Patriots DVOA rankings over the past 12 seasons. The offensive side of the board certainly looks pretty green, eh? That will be put to the test this season. And check out the Patriots run defense this past season after two down seasons. It’s strange because everyone remembers Ray Rice’s first play touchdown run in the […]
