Patriots make their first external free agent signing of the 2015 season, receiver Brandon Gibson. Not the splash anyone was hoping for, but the kind of low risk veteran, who played for Josh McDaniels in St. Louis, that the Pats are known for. And yeah, this was a nice TD.

O all the high powered offenses the patriot have had why do you u think this years postseason was the most successful (disregarding the defense)

Well, I was about to start with two playoff game-sealing interceptions, but if I have to stick to the offense I’d say it’s the total balance of the offense. Look at the playoff touchdown numbers:

  • Gronk – 3
  • Amendola – 3
  • Blount – 3
  • LaFell – 2
  • Brady/Edelman/Solder/Develin – 1

Not to mention all those players came through in the clutch, and the Pats had their backs against the wall quite a few times in two of the three playoff games.

Just off the top of my head clutch plays by Edelman, Gronk, Amendola and LaFell immediately jump to mind. If one of those plays goes the other way, the Pats Super Bowl run might’ve been stopped.

So it’s having enough threats that you couldn’t just take one thing away and shut them down, and those threats all coming through when called upon.

James White 2013 Highlights

He won’t be the instant Vereen replacement, but James White will certainly get a chance to show his stuff this summer. Let’s remember he formed a prolific duo with this year’s top running back coming out in the draft, Melvin Gordon.

With a red shirt year under his belt, White will be one to watch in training camp.

Shane Vereen 2013 Highlights

With Vereen signing with the Giants, here are some highlights from 2013. Obviously Vereen was huge in the Super Bowl, but I think the Patriots will be fine replacing him with some combination of second-year running back James White, a free agent like Roy Helu, along with some contributions from Brandon Bolden. Hopefully White or the free agent emerges in camp, it’s a big role in the Pats offense but not an impossible one to fill.

Four-for-Four: A Look at the NFL Free-Agent Market | Alen Dumonjić

Really good stuff from Alen Dumonjic, not only on McCourty but two of my favorite Patriots potential free agent fits – Dan Williams and Jabaal Sheard.

The “Patriots don’t pay big money in free agency” myth exists only for low-comprehension observers. The reality is they usually don’t pay big money for your free agents. Free agency is an exercise in speculation. There’s good speculation, and bad speculation. The Patriots pay big when the unknowns are at a minimum – they don’t when the projection into their own system is too much of a guess. That’s all. These are the luxuries you have when you aren’t trying to catch someone else.

History has shown that this team is willing to go after speculative players in free agency, just not the ones that cost top dollar. Wide receiver Brandon LaFell and cornerback Brandon Browner are two recent examples of this philosophy making good. Established players coming from vastly different systems have come in and done big things for the Patriots organization. But if they hadn’t, there was no cap-killing financial marriage. Those kinds of nuptials where you absolutely can’t be wrong are reserved for the people they know best.

I’d be the first one to admit now, I’m older, wiser, more mature, that if I could have done something all over again, I would have tried my damnedest to stay in New England and finish my career.
