Don’t worry. I’m not panicking. I’m embracing the mystery. Just something I wanted your thoughts on: if the Patriots do end up playing more zone on account of, you know, not having their man-coverage corners anymore, how well do you think they’re set up at Safety? McCourty is good, but Chung is pretty weak in coverage, I have no idea what Harmon is, etc. More specifically, what kind of Safety play do different schemes necessitate and do the Patriots have players who can make that happen?

Yeah this is one of my biggest questions because they did just extend Chung. There obviously is still a place for him to excel in Cover 3 Robber, which is basically the same role he had last year and a coverage the Pats played a lot of with Rodney Harrison.

But if their corners need lots of help and they have to go more Cover 2, you’re going to see a lot more of Duron Harmon I think.  I still don’t think Chung is incapable of playing back, at least in Cover 2. He’s just not a centerfielder in Cover 1.

There’s ways around it, but they’re not going to be a full zone team and there are a number of big receivers they know they’ll have to deal with – Demaryius, Decker/Marshall, even Sammy Watkins is 6′1″, Dez Bryant. Those matchups are the ones that appear to be problems at this point in free agency.

And embracing the mystery is always the way to go at this point in the offseason. We can panic about holes/potential holes in mid-May.

It’s been reported that Danny Amendola has restructured his deal, as expected, giving the Pats some more cap space to operate with. Amendola really came into his own this year, starting when he began returning kickoffs. In the playoffs, he emerged as a complimentary threat who came through with three touchdowns and a huge third down conversion against the Ravens.

Now that he’s no longer viewed as the “Welker replacement” Amendola can continue to carve out a vital role in the offense. Excited to welcome him back.

Patriots Sign Jabaal Sheard to 2-year, $11 million deal

The Patriots finally made a significant move in free agency, signing defensive end Jabaal Sheard to a two-year deal worth $11 million according to multiple outlets. 

Sheard was a player that I, along with quite a few other Pats analysts, liked. I had him ranked 17th overall on my big board that season and now that the Pats are getting him, it’s a very good move.

Sheard immediately becomes a legitimate 3rd defensive end, and while he has some pass rush power, it’s his stoutness against the run that really make him a great fit. He can sub for both Rob Ninkovich or Chandler Jones, and also serve as a designated pass rusher in sub-packages.

While he played some outside linebacker in Cleveland, he was better as a defensive end, which is how the Pats will ask him to play. Knowing he can stand up and drop occassionally, something the Pats will do with their ends, is a big plus.

Throw in he was the Browns 2013 Walter Payton Man of the Year for his service in the community and he’s really a perfect fit in New England. He plays the way the Pats want to play.

For those clamoring for more pass rush now that the outside corners have been downgraded, this is a move to feel even better about.
