“Probably underrated. He doesn’t really sometimes come across in that role but what I see, Rob’s very attentive, very coachable. You tell him what you want him to do, he works very hard to do it the way you want it done. He’s a smart football player. He understands leverage, he understands position, he understands technique. He understands the concept of what you’re trying to do. We move him around at lot of different positions. He has a really a lot to learn.

Probably other than the quarterback, the tight end position on our offense is the hardest to play because you have all the protections, all the running game and you have routes from sideline to the middle of the field to occasionally even in the backfield. There’s really no plays off mentally for that position. His work ethic, his ability to work with his teammates, whether it’s the quarterback, the offensive tackles, the other tight ends or even with the defensive players is good. He’s really a great guy to have on the team. Forget about the talent and all that. Just the way he goes about his job, the way he works, trains in the weight room, his physical conditioning, his mental concentration and focus and desire to be well and do well and improve are very, very good.”

Do you buy the 2007 scorch-the-earth hype for this season? I’ve seen a lot of writers say/imply it, but it’s so early. The Pats do have a relatively easy schedule (AFC South, Cowboys w/o Romo/Dez) but I’m being cautiously optimistic about this year because of the secondary. (And I don’t wanna face the Giants in the SB again.)

I haven’t really been at the forefront of that charge because honestly I think the Patriots and Brady are always pretty locked in and intense. That 2007 situation was special because it actually happened to the current team and was being spun to discredit what current members of the team did. So yeah, they were pissed off and looking to prove a point.

But now it happened last year, a good portion of the current players weren’t even on the team, and nearly all the rest have only been here for a short time at least as far as the earlier Super Bowl wins go.

I do think there’s an element of Brady getting some extra juice from his personal experience, as well as Belichick and McDaniels as far as gameplanning goes – i.e. when they’re up by double digits in the fourth quarter and they’re still looking to pile points on. I think we’ll see them hit 50 at least once or twice this season and there will be crying about it.

But overall I think this team very much has the potential to be better than last year’s when you consider who they’re going to have to beat. Last year we needed Revis and Browner in a bad way, but this year their absence can be overcome with all the additional pieces up front along with solid play from Butler and Brown at corner.

(via It’s Tom Brady Day! Here are Some Things You Might Not Remember About the Week Brady Became a NFL Starter | The Big Lead)

Fun read on the incubation of the Tom Brady Patriots period. I have trouble celebrating Mo Lewis too much because Bledsoe almost died, but that was the first domino to fall toward a decade-and-a-half of dominance.

FOOTBALL OUTSIDERS | Word of Muth: Cards Won’t Budge

FOOTBALL OUTSIDERS | Word of Muth: Cards Won’t Budge Interesting read about how the Pats o-line struggled to generate any push up front in the run game. The pass protection has been generally graded out as solid, but this shows where the problems are… The biggest problem by far for New England’s running game was […]
