Patriots Ranked 7th in Football Outsiders DVOA

Patriots Ranked 7th in Football Outsiders DVOA

If you don’t know how to read Football Outsiders DVOA advanced stats I highly recommend you figure it out (they have in depth explanations on the site). Basically they grade each play based on the situation (so getting 2 yard on 1st and 10 gets a low grade, but getting 2 yards on 4th and 2 gets a high grade), and the Patriots are one team known to use their stats.

Any way the Patriots are 7th overall after week two. The breakdown is:

  • 3rd in Offense
  • 29th in Defense (eeeeeeek!)
  • 6th in Special Teams

The Jets are 4th overall.

  • 12th in Offense.
  • 8 in Defense.
  • 9th in Special Teams.

The Dolphins are 5th overall.

  • 14th in Offense.
  • 5th in Defense.
  • 21st in Special Teams.

The Bills are 32nd (aka last) overall.

  • 29th in Offense.
  • 27th in Defense.
  • 12th in Special Teams

He is a move player who is as much wide receiver as he is traditional tight end. He can line up on the line of scrimmage in the traditional tight end spot, but he is best detached from the formation or in motion.

He’s a superb route runner for a rookie tight end and has soft, secure hands. He is also exceptional after the catch. Hernandez caught every pass thrown his way this past Sunday and has a catch of 45 yards or more in both games as a pro. Hernandez is exactly the type of player who succeeds in the NFL. He is the type of player who creates mismatches in his team’s favor.

The Patriots Offense Will Evolve Without Faulk

September 22, 2010 by Mike Dussault

Upon scanning the internets this morning I found a general state of panic and doom amongst many Patriots fans over the loss of Kevin Faulk. Of course, that’s to be expected with New England fans.

Make no mistake, we all know that Faulk was the unsung hero of the Patriots dynasty, but I believe his loss will force the Patriots offense to evolve in a way that will greatly benefit them down the road.

Find out why after the jump…

Shalise Manza Young of the Boston Globe reports that Kevin Faulk is done for the year with a torn ACL. The play on which it happened looked innocent enough but the most dreaded of all knee injuries was apparently the result.

Where do we go from here? The Patriots are already thin at running back, and Faulk is the most valuable of them all. His blocking and pass catching skill are integral to the spread offense, not to mention the veteran leadership that he brought as a captain.

No way around it, this is a tough blow to the Pats. The season is a battle of attrition and the Patriots have been hit hard in 2010 by injuries, already having lost three vital members of their team before week three.

No excuses though, Faulk will be missed but this loss will force the Patriots to evolve how they do things on offense and that isn’t always a bad thing. Perhaps new addition Danny Woodhead will be able to contribute as a pass catching running back, or maybe it will be Julian Edelman.

There are fourteen more battles to be fought in the 2010 campaign, the Pats must find a way to get it done without Faulk. With injuries come opportunities for other players, and those other players must step up. Sometimes that’s how you find your next star player.
