A Closer Look at the 2010 Patriots Defense (Halfway Edition)

November 12, 2010 by Mike Dussault

This season I’ve dedicated myself to focusing on the defensive personnel and strategy that the Patriots are using. I’ve kept track of formations. I’ve charted snap percentages. And I’ve enjoyed every minute of it.

It has been an education and I’m happy to share some attempted insight at just what the Patriots have tried to do on defense that has left them with a 6-2 record, yet a poorly ranked defense.

I bust out the defensive snap percentage charts and provide a break down of the three levels of the Belichick 2.0 Pats Defense after the jump…

Patriots Defensive Linemen Snap Graph

Brace coming back on! But I think we’ll see a lot of Gerard Warren against the Steelers.

Here’s whats really interesting to me. Pryor and Wright STARTED against the Browns yet were surpassed by Deaderick and Brace by a large margin. Pryor has always been better at interior pass rush, Wright can play run or pass but is best utilized as an interior rusher as well. So why start them? You knew the Browns offensive key was Peyton Hillis, yet you don’t start your run stopper guys?

I’m not saying this was a stupid decision, it’s just a curious one. But there has to be a reason behind it. Anyone got a guess?

PatsPulpit: Beat the Patriots On the Ground? I don’t think so…

PatsPulpit: Beat the Patriots On the Ground? I don’t think so…

Great read by Greg Knopping and he’s totally right, lazy mediots see what Peyton Hillis did and assume the Pats run D sucks. Well it really doesn’t.

The truth is the way to beat this Patriots team is through the air. With short, effective passes. The Patriots tackle well, but they bite on play action and will give up completions in the 4-8 yard range.

We’ve seen glimpses of the Patriots playing good coverage, especially in the Ravens game. When they do that they are actually a very good defense. We just haven’t seen much of it in a few games.

Steelers lose to Patriots and this Steeler fan takes the lost bet like a man.

The moral of the video? Never bet against the Pats!

Looks like all signs are pointing toward Patchung! coming back this week. Yes, he’s my favorite player on the defense but this is just the boost they need. Let’s not forget he was second on the team in tackles before taking a helmet to the knee against the Chargers. Hopefully he provides a spark!

Hey I found a tolerable way to rewatch the Patriots – Lions game… 28 seconds of time lapse photography from a distance. (Source: https://www.youtube.com/)
