Thank you, Antonio Cromartie!

January 12, 2011 by Mike Dussault

So as you’ve probably heard by now Antonio Cromartie went off on TFB this morning, calling him an a-hole, etc. You know, I would’ve been a whole lot more worried about this game if it was radio silence out of the Jets camp.

Some even speculated after they beat the Colts that there might’ve been a gag order placed on the Jets this week. But nope.

I’ve said many times that I like what Rex Ryan brings to the rivalry. And while I’m sick of hearing him talk, I’m certainly not sick of having him get me even more pumped up to play the Jets.

What’s maddening to me is how the Jets can talk all this trash before games, and then when they lose and other teams get fired up about beating them (you know in the game, where it counts) they act like the other teams are the ones who are jerks.

Don’t rattle the tiger’s cage and then come off all surprised when the tiger mauls you, fellas.

Ultimately I don’t think Brady really needs any added motivation this week. I don’t think he really cares what Cromartie says. But it’s the guys like Logan Mankins and Vince Wilfork, the guys who will be in the trenches that material like this will be most detrimental to the Jets.

Really the Jets have to hope that the Patriots are not clicking on all cylinders this weekend if they’re to have a chance. That’s simple math. Brady > Sanchez. But by continuing to talk the Jets are ensuring that every single member of the Patriots will be locked in and pissed off. That’s not the kind of team you want to play.

So thanks, Al-cro-traz!

Yeah, Brady’s the asshole.

The Jets know just what to do this time vs. Pats?

January 11, 2011 by Mike Dussault

So there have been reports kicking around today, and Pete Sheppard (who is slowly working his way into my rotation of Pats media) played itron the air, that after 45-3 Bart Scott told a reporter off the air that they knew exactly what to do should the face the Patriots offense again.

That thing being “funnel everything to the middle”. Rex Ryan was asked about this quote and avoided answering it directly which maybe lends some credence to what Scott said.

Who knew that stopping what Football Outsiders standards has as the best offense of the modern era was just that simple. Funnel everything to the middle. Easy, peezy, cover two.

I’m not sure why this was suddenly apparent to the Jets after the game, I guess that in-game adjustment escaped them while the Pats were reigning down touchdowns on them.

Well, it’s my hope to at least help get the word about this out and about, because if it is true I assume BB is already on top of it, but why not spread the word.

In theory I can see how it might make sense given the Pats are now running a “horizontal” attack. If you don’t let receivers catch their slip screens and get outside it seems logical that they wouldn’t have much room to operate running back into the traffic.

Though when I think about that Deion Branch touchdown on fourth down he pretty much ran right through the heart of their defense. But what do I know. I ain’t Mike Mayock (despite how much I wish I was).

Everyone seems pretty assured that this game will be closer than 42 points, but even half that is still is a blow out.

Patriots vs. Jets is for all the marbles, but just what are the marbles?

January 11, 2011 by Mike Dussault

Ultimately the only thing that really matters on Sunday is that one team will be going to the AFC Championship and the other will be left to ponder what went wrong for the next six months.

But in the even bigger picture, the historical picture, there’s even more at stake. The Patriots and Jets are 2-2 in the last two seasons, and while the Patriots have two division titles, the Jets have three playoff wins.

All time, the Patriots – Jets series currently sits at 51-51-1. So yes, this game will not only decide who truly is the better team of the last two years, but which organization owns the most wins over the other. Of course we can get into Super Bowl title talk, but we’ll leave it at just head to head because we all know who wins that debate.

Then of course there’s Mark Sanchez and Rex Ryan. When they came to New York it was to dethrone the Patriots, and they have failed both times they’ve faced the Pats in a meaningful, late season game. If they lose this one as well, to a Patriots team that is younger than them, the pressure in 2011 will be even more squarely on Rexy and Sanchez to deliver.

Sanchez has been horrible in his two games at New England, throwing seven interceptions and fumbling twice. If he puts forth a third effort like that he’ll be hearing more and more questions if he has what it takes to beat the vaunted Pats when it’s do or die time. Stories in the offseason aren’t written about what happened week two, they’re written about how the season ended.

Tom Brady also has a chance to move within one more win of the all time playoff win record. He currently has 14, Montana has the record at 16.

In the regular season I’m usually a big proponent of whoever needs a game more usually wins. But in the playoffs sometimes needing the game means there’s more pressure and teams, especially young teams, can often fold under that pressure.

This is a chance for the Patriots young defense to prove that they can continue to play the style of football they played all season when it’s all on the line. They can’t try to do too much or make something out of nothing. But they also cannot play tentative or “not to lose”.

The Jets will not play that way. They are a playoff tested group that will come in, play their game and play it hard. If the young Patriots just do their job like they did for most of the season they will be fine.

Notes on the Patriots (initial) 53-Man Roster

There are sure to be some more moves coming over the next day or so, but the New England Patriots initial 53-man roster has taken shape with no major surprises (yet). The biggest thing appears that the Pats wanted to protect 10 offensive linemen. Not all 10 will likely be on the roster by Tuesday, […]
