Today in things Patriots fans can feel good about…

January 28, 2011 by Mike Dussault

One Patriots rookie hasn’t gotten much love at all so far this offseason but how about Zoltan Mesko? Look, I’m no punting expert but just the fact that he didn’t get cut and didn’t mess up holding any Field Goals or Extra Points (though there was one botched play clock expiration) while being 14th in the NFL in net punting bodes well for the rookie’s future.

Is there room to improve? Of course (he tied for 25th in punts inside the 20 yard line), but it appears that the revolving door of Patriots punters has stopped spinning for the next few years. Plus who doesn’t love a player whose nickname is The Space Emperor of Space?

Here’s Zoltan making basically a game-saving punt against the Ravens in overtime, by far his best play of the 2010 season.

And then there’s this one too…

SC: Bill Belichick has said that you’re one of the best players he’s ever coached. What is it about his approach and his system that produces such consistently excellent results, even through serious roster changes?

RH: I think the first thing you have to look at is his ability to know players. You don’t hit home runs on every player, but you’ve seen his ability to get guys who are considered castoffs, whether they’ve had injury issues or problems off the field. I came in injured from San Diego, he gave me a chance, and I ended up winning back-to-back Super Bowls. Look at a guy like Corey Dillon, who everyone thought was a troublemaker. He came in, was a model citizen, and helped us win a Super Bowl. Randy Moss(notes) came in and was a great teammate of mine; never caused any problems and had a monster year in 2007.
So, these are the types of moves [Belichick] makes, and this is why he’s so special. He’s also not afraid to get rid of guys and make the bold changes, like he made with Randy Moss and Drew Bledsoe. You have to be able to make bold moves, and he’s not afraid to do that.

This morning we bring you a draft prospect that could definitely be on the Patriots radar. Say hello to John Moffitt, an interior lineman who was a four year starter and played every position inside the line. He’s big and mean just like my Mankins and has the versatility the Pats love. Mayock has loved him at the Senior Bowl practices this week. Plus from the clip above he seems like a pretty good dude.

Jeff Howe: Larry Fitzgerald Available

January 27, 2011 by Mike Dussault

Jeff Howe: Larry Fitzgerald Available

Now this would be an acquisition I could get behind. Fitz is 27 (6.5 years younger than Ochostinko and none of the off the field baggage) and clearly would be an explosive playmaking addition to the Pats.

The question becomes how much should the Pats be willing to give up for Fitz? I’d say the 17th pick overall is out of the question. But the 28th and Brian Hoyer I’d consider. We all know that the Patriots aren’t going to pick another twelve guys this year. Some of these picks either have to be traded for players, to move up, or for future picks.

Brady’s not getting any younger and there’s no reason to continually stock up on draft picks. At some point you’ve got to go all in and say “alright we’re maximizing all this value we’ve acquired over the years RIGHT NOW”.
