NFP/Bunting: Akeem Ayers a gem for Patriots?

NFP/Bunting: Akeem Ayers a gem for Patriots?

Between Ayers and Cameron Heyward there are no other two guys who have more varied scouting reports out there. On many it looks like Ayers is the perfect Patriots fit, but in the limited film I’ve seen he doesn’t look fast or physical.

You’ll see what I think of him tomorrow when the Patriots big board gets released, but there aren’t many guys out there who are more polarizing.

Patriots’ Brandon Meriweather accused of shooting two people

March 10, 2011 by Mike Dussault

So by now everyone has probably heard the news that some lawyer is alleging that Brandon Meriweather shot two people last week in Florida. Here’s how Deadspin described it:

The trouble started at the Blue Jeans Lounge in Apokpa when a friend of Meriweather’s allegedly beat up a woman, according to Morgan. The woman’s brother arrived later with his own friend, and the conflagration shifted to a nearby party, where the brother soon got the better of Meriweather’s friend in a fight. That’s when Meriweather allegedly pulled out his gun and fired at the brother, grazing the man’s face and hitting the other victim in the head, according to Morgan.

The man who raised Meriweather (yes, that’s how he was described) told the Boston Herald that it wasn’t true. There haven’t be charges filed either so right now it seems very much murky as to what happened.

It certainly doesn’t help that Meriweather had an incident where he shot at someone while in college:

Miami Hurricanes reserve safety Willie Cooper was shot in the buttocks when confronted in his yard Friday morning by an unknown person who fled after another player returned gunfire.

Police said Cooper was able to walk after being shot and the injury wasn’t believed to be serious, but he was taken to a hospital for treatment.

After Cooper was shot, teammate and roommate Brandon Meriweather pulled a pistol from his pants pocket and fired three times at the person, who jumped a fence and fled with another person in a car, police said. It was unclear if the assailant was hit.

So clearly at one point in his life Meriweather was carrying a gun with him, although legally. We’d hope that he’s now a professional athlete those days are behind him, but this story definitely won’t help him in the court of public opinion until the facts come to light.

Of course going for the kill shot then only grazing someone certainly does sound like Brandon as well…

Stay tuned…

“I have Brooks Reed of Arizona going in the late first,” Kiper said. “You would have thought second. But I’ll say late first.” Reed’s stock is soaring after an outstanding ten-yard split at the Combine. We’d guess he’ll go in the mid to late 20s on April 28, but it isn’t out of the question for New England to fall in love with the Clay Matthews clone and pick him 17th.“

Patriots Prospect Watch: Allen Bailey

March 9, 2011 by Mike Dussault

The Patriots are having Miami DL Allen Bailey in for a visit this week. Check out Erik Frenz’ article here for a little more about him. The more I see of him the more I like him. Here’s some film:

http://movieclips.com/e/3zfG/

I came across the Brady “dance” video on Monday and decided not to post it because it’s not really my style to throw the QB I love under the bus. Especially since my own dance moves are similarly embarrassing.

Of course it went viral on Tuesday and it even forced Charlie “Winning” Sheen into the pop culture back seat. What can we do, almost all the non-draft NFL news out there right now is pretty depressing.

So for all you out there who got a chuckle at TFB’s expense, I’ll let Ren McCormick issue my retort…

Defensive linemen Will Smith, Tommy Kelly and Vince Wilfork were all full participants for all two hours of practice. That’s a promising sign for a defensive line rotation that was ravaged by injuries last season. Wilfork, in particular, has looked much improved over OTAs, where he appeared to be lumbering around a bit. Patriots Minicamp […]
