Three-round Patriots mock draft picks from Kiper & McShay

April 6, 2011 by Mike Dussault

The longer the mock draft the more and more ridiculous it becomes, but that doesn’t stop ESPN’s resident draft gurus Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay from doing three rounders. At least they don’t attempt the ultimate exercise in futility, aka the seven round mock draft.

Here’s who they have the Pats taking:

Kiper

  • Cameron Jordan
  • Justin Houston
  • Danny Watkins
  • Jonathan Baldwin
  • Daniel Thomas
  • Marcus Gilchrist

McShay

  • JJ Watt
  • Mark Ingram
  • Clint Boling
  • Daniel Thomas
  • Jabaal Sheard
  • Marcus Gilchrist

Instead of criticizing these picks (and I definitely don’t see all these guys as great fits) let’s just imagine that these are the actual results of who the Patriots drafted. Either way you get a sense of just how much talent the Pats are poised to add yet again this spring.

But clearly there are some divisive prospects on here. McShay’s draft alone would be great fodder for the podcast since Frenz would be psyched to get Watt, but scratching his head over Ingram.

Interesting that both mocks had Daniel Thomas and Marcus Gilchrist as selections, and along with Jonathan Baldwin make up the only three that aren’t on my big board.

Baldwin had some character flags that caused me to drop him. I believe there are better backs available than Thomas, though he’s big and seems like he would add a new element to the Green-Ellis/Woodhead backfield.

Gilchrist projects to safety but his lack of physicality is a big of a flag to me as well. There is definitely a need for a developmental free safety so perhaps Gilchrist could be a good fit, especially if he could play a little nickel corner as Wes Bunting believes he could day one.

Kinda feels like off-season Danny Woodhead day, so why not a little highlight package of him. Excited to see what he can do after a full year to digest the playbook and come in ready to contribute.

One of the biggest reasons I enjoy being a Patriots fan so much are special players like Wes Welker and Woodhead who might get overlooked by other teams, but BB finds a spot for them and allows their talent to shine. So much fun to watch…

Woodhead for Madden Cover?

April 5, 2011 by Mike Dussault

Woodhead for Madden Cover?

There’s a lot of debate right now in Patriots Nation about whether or not we want Danny Woodhead on the cover of Madden 2012. Personally I’m all for it, I don’t buy into stupid curses and having Woody on the cover would be great for promoting the sport to tiny white guys. It’s also nice that it has a little “one that got away” element for the Jets as well. So vote for Woody!

ESPN: Belichick unanimously voted best coach

ESPN: Belichick unanimously voted best coach

Um der…

Also had to include this quote:

For the first time in ESPN.com’s individual Power Rankings series, the eight panelists reached unanimity. Each of us voted Belichick the NFL’s best head coach, and there’s little room for argument.

As someone who has scrolled through their comments for the past three years, I can hear the Spygate whiners already.

But Belichick hasn’t won anything since the New England Patriots were caught videotaping defensive hand signals …

That’s true, I suppose, if you don’t consider 51 victories, a .797 win percentage, three division titles and a trip to the Super Bowl not winning anything. I’m pretty sure fans of any team other than the Green Bay Packers, New Orleans Saints, Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants gladly would trade their past four years for the Patriots’ so-called embarrassments.

Belichick on how the Patriots build their draft board

Belichick on how the Patriots build their draft board

Great stuff from Mike Reiss, the most interesting quote below. This week we’ll take a similar approach with our big board and break it down by positions and what round we think would be appropriate.

“When you stack your board, you’re going to look vertically … The way we do it, we look vertically by positions. Here’s all the quarterbacks, here’s all the tight ends, here’s all the running backs,” Belichick said at the time.

“[Then] horizontally across the board, you try to get some kind of value of … This cornerback and this guard, and this linebacker and this tight end would have about the same value. They’d come in and they’d be role players for us. They’re never going to be starters. Or whatever their value is.

"And so when you’re sitting there trying to make your picks, you may be looking at three or four guys and they’re all kind of about the same. You’re five or six picks away and whichever one of these guys we end up with, we take them in this order, but we could live with any of them.”

“Some think he fits best at left defensive end in a four-man front. I also think he’d fit well as a defensive end in the 3-4. He has been very consistent over the first three days of practices. "One of his greatest strengths is his hands. He has very active hands, very strong hands, and […]
