Rex Ryan on the three games of 2010 vs. the Patriots

It was a little hard to watch this at first, but I bit the bullet and I’m glad I did. As a Patriots fan you might not like Rex Ryan but you certainly have to respect the coaching performance he had in getting his team to rebound from the 45-3 blowout to beat the Pats in the playoffs. I know BB does.

There’s no question that they were absolutely the better team on that day in January. Of course if Crumpler doesn’t drop that TD it could’ve been a very different game. But them’s the bounces, and I know the Patriots will bounce back, especially with such a young defense that will still have a lot to prove in 2011.

Love him or hate him, Rexy makes the Pats-Jets rivalry a million times more fun, and at the end of the day that’s what football is all about.

I do think there is still interest in [Mat Light] coming back if the sides can reach an agreement. I’d lean toward it not happening, with Light landing in Kansas City. Makes too much sense to me.

Mike Reiss

Interesting. I’ve been of the opinion that Light would be back for a year or two, giving Solder some time. Definitely something we’ll ask Reiss about this weekend on the podcast.

Frenz:Why the New England Patriots Passed on a Pass Rusher

Frenz:Why the New England Patriots Passed on a Pass Rusher

Great stuff here from my podcast mate Erik Frenz. Here’s a nice excerpt…

[In 2010],  the Patriots not only got more sacks [than 2009], but they came from a wider group of players. It’s hard to believe the Patriots pass rush improved between 2009 and 2010, but they made strides toward the defense they want to run.

Why would spreading them out be better? It’s easier to neutralize the pass rush if all the production is coming from one player. Simply lock onto that “pass rush specialist” and boom, tough actin’ Tinactin…or something.

TCU Daily Skiff: Malcolm Williams’ unlikely journey

TCU Daily Skiff: Malcolm Williams’ unlikely journey

I thought the selection of Matthew Slater a few years back was a little outside the box, but picking Malcolm Williams takes the cake. At least Slater came from an NFL lineage and was at a Pac-10 school. I wonder if there a single other NFL team out there that even had him on their radar. Will be interesting to see how he does in training camp. Whenever that is…
